Earth dialed the heat up in June, smashing warm temperature records for both the month and the first half of the year.

Off-the-charts heat is "getting to be a monthly thing," said Jessica Blunden, a climate scientist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. June was the fourth month of 2015 that set a record, she said.

"There is almost no way that 2015 isn't going to be the warmest on record," she added.

NOAA calculated that the world's average temperature in June hit 61.48 degrees Fahrenheit (16.33 Celsius), breaking the old record set last year by 0.22 degrees (.12 degrees Celsius). Usually temperature records are broken by one or two one-hundredths of a degree, not nearly a quarter of a degree, Blunden said.

And the picture is even more dramatic when the half-year is considered.

The first six months of 2015 were one-sixth of a degree warmer than the old record, set in 2010, averaging 57.83 degrees (14.35 Celsius).

The old record for the first half of the year was set in 2010, the last time there was an El Nino — a warming of the central Pacific Ocean that changes weather worldwide. But in 2010, the El Nino petered out. This year, forecasters are predicting this El Nino will get stronger, not weaker.

"If that happens, it's just going to go off the charts," Blunden said.

June was warm nearly all over the world, with exceptional heat in Spain, Austria, parts of Asia, Australia and South America. Southern Pakistan had a June heat wave that killed more than 1,200 people — which, according to an international database, would be the eighth deadliest in the world since 1900. In May, a heat wave in India claimed more than 2,000 lives and ranked as the fifth deadliest on record.

The graph gives a very small data point that can be, and as we see, a false conclusion.

    Highly unusual.

Haven't busted 100 degrees yet this year.

Coolest summer we've had in many years.

Wonder how they'll act when they're caught this time "adjusting" their data?

    Be very thankful for that.

Be thankful you have not had weather like that in India where a severe heat wave killed several thousand people.

There are more experiencing heat waves, but you get the idea I am sure.

I get the idea they're doctoring the numbers again and some suckers just keep falling for the same lies.

Meanwhile, the polar ice caps continue to grow. :godisgood:

Where was this so-called "global warming" this past winter in Tennessee and Kentucky, and probably many other places as well?

We faced one of the worst ice storms in recorded history.

It was so bad that most places were so totally covered with ice that:

    1) The street and/or highway and/or other first responders were unable to not only to clear most of the roads for many days, but even if they could, the roads were blocked by fallen tree branches (or other debris) such that many fire departments couldn't get through to fight many fires that were caused by live power lines that fell under the weight of the accumulated ice and set outside gas tanks (either at homes or businesses--or both) ablaze with the result of millions of $$ of property damage.

    2) Some homes were so totally destroyed either by fires or ice-laden tree branches falling on them, or both (Not to mention the roads by which they were located) that they had to eventually be condemned by the building codes people.

    3) And, just where were these people going to go to get any relief from the bitter cold? In some cases, they had to depend on the good-heartedness of people who opened their own private homes to people who were total strangers to them.

    4) Many elderly people, some with severe physical, medical, and yes, even mental disabilities were forced to be evacuated from hospitals or nursing homes to find shelter in already over-crowded rescue missions or in school gymnasiums that were opened for them.

Of course there were no regularly-scheduled school classes because many school districts/systems had to cancel them since few (if any) faculty, staff, janitorial personnel, as well as students couldn't get to their schools due to the very hazardous road conditions.

    5) Most government offices were closed for the same reason(s). Quite a few businesses had to either close or operate on reduced hours with only "skeleton crews."

    6) Buying groceries or necessary medicines, etc., was almost impossible because they too were either closed or couldn't be stocked because there were no supply trucks getting through--or, if they could get through, there were few parking lots that were cleared enough to allow the customers to access the stores or pharmacies to purchase needed foods and/or medicines or both.

    7) Some public businesses had other problems due to the fact that there was no electricity to run the freezers, the lights, or even the cash registers.

    8) And, don't forget that gas stations can't pump gas for any vehicles since their gas pumps are operated by electric power---no power, no gas, no getting around!

Yes, it sure was a challenge for lots of folks to manage any semblance of life earlier this year.

Being partially disabled, several times I had to depend on some friends to shovel out my very small, but highly-angled driveway just to get to my mailbox located down the rather steeply inclined road in front of my condo building.

My neighbor (who isn't disabled) almost broke his hip because his doorway is shaded, and apparently he missed some spots on his steps leading up to his front door when he salted what little salt he was able to purchase....When almost everyone else was stocking up on what little salt they could acquire, I'm sure that salt prices were not reduced to move such items off the counters [Can you say "price gouging"?]

Most church services were cancelled because few people could get to them anyway--much less find a well-cleared off parking space.

Meals On Wheels had real problems too. How are they going to get to the home-bound disabled and/or elderly folks who literally depend on such services? (I might add that, due to the fact that some services as these were forced to re-evaluate some of their logistic procedures as a result of the "1,000-year flood" that much of TN experienced back in May,2010, they were able to overcome some of the problems that might have otherwise totally crippled their operations during these times. Talk about a "blessing in disguise"!)

While some of the more densely populated areas were able to overcome some of the problems we faced in a shorter amount of time--like a good part of the Metro-Nashville "city area--many of the outlying, more rural areas weren't able to recover from the widespread damage for almost 2-3 months.

A retired pastor friend of mine who lives in the Somerset, KY, area had his entire basement flooded due to his pipes being first frozen, then burst open when they thawed out. He lost a lot of personal papers, etc., because he had them stored in his basement.

Thankfully he had some very good church friends who came to his aid by being able to shut off the water pipes that supplied water to his house.

Of course, with the water shut off, he and his very disabled wife had to spend time in someone else's home that was at a higher altitude than theirs until he was able to borrow some sump pumps to drain out the 8-10 inches of water from his basement floor.

Yes, a lot of people sure could have used some global warming back a few months ago.

Ironically (Well, maybe not so ironically.) TN's own Al Gore never seemed to be present then to warn us of the dangers of global warming.

I don't think anyone--even in his hometown of Carthage, which is located in a valley area of the eastern Highland Rim and was so cut off from the outside world that the TN National Guard had to use their military-style half tracks to access many parts of Smith County which otherwise would have been totally isolated for weeks--"Spotted Al" when we needed him most.

    Go figure!

See you are missing the point:

    1. More heat means global warming except when there is more cold then that means global warming.

    2. One single weather event does not mean there is not global warming except when it does.

You are right. A single data point does not show a trend. But a chart of over 100 years does show a trend, a warming trend.

The first graphic shows most areas as "6th warmest", "5th warmest" etc. And it also shows Antarctic ice as "3rd largest extent on record". None of that is anything particularly dire.

Right after the year 2000, NASA and NOAA dramatically altered US climate history, making the past much colder and the present much warmer. The animation below shows how NASA cooled 1934 and warmed 1998, to make 1998 the hottest year in US history instead of 1934. This alteration turned a long term cooling trend since 1930 into a warming trend.

It will all melt with fervent heat anyway. Let us do more research on the melting points of rare earths. Our electronic gadgetry may be in jeopardy. What would we do without computers? We would probably have more time to contemplate our navels.

    Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

Good news. Mrs. Rolf and I were just talking a few days ago about hopefully using the skis this winter now that I am mended up. Unable to get out at all last season.

I'm looking forward to another great season of ice fishing in western Ny this year.

Last year the ice was thicker than it's been in a couple decades!

About fifteen years ago, one of the nearby towns had some type of festival (ice fishing, I think). People regularly drive on the frozen lakes here, so a beer truck was sent out as part of the celebration. It fell through. The beer was saved.
