    INTRODUCTION:

My message this morning is entitled, "The Majority is Not Always Right" (Matthew 7:13, 14).

In 1844 a medical doctor named Ignas Phillip Semmelweis, who was the assistant director at the Vienna Maternity Hospital, suggested to the doctors that the high rate of death of patients and new babies was due to the fact that the doctors attending them were carrying infections from the diseased and dead people whom they had previously touched.

Dr. Semmelweis ordered doctors to wash their hands with soap and water and rinse them in a strong chemical before examining their patients. He tried to get doctors to wear clean clothes and he fought for clean wards. However, the majority of doctors disagreed with Dr. Semmelweis and they deliberately disobeyed his orders.

In the late nineteenth century, on the basis of the work by Dr. Semmelweis, Dr. Joseph Lister ("Listerine mouthwash" was named after him) began soaking surgery instruments, the operating table, his hands, and the patients with carbolic acid. The results were astonishing. What was previously risky surgery now became routine.

However, the majority of doctors criticized his work also. Today we all know that Dr. Lister and Dr. Semmelweis were right, and the majority of doctors in their day were dead wrong. Just because the majority believe one thing does not necessarily mean it is true.

Sounds like an internet fun fact page, talk about Jesus instead.

"I do not want to take up too much time this morning discussing American history or government.."

Then don't do it. You already took too much time reciting facts to the sheep at 10 in the morning. Feed them Jesus.

"If you listen to the news media -- whether in the newspapers, magazines, the radio, television, or the Internet -- you will notice that we are constantly being bombarded with the results of surveys."

    then later you say:

"According to statistics, only 33% of the people in..."

Okay, it actually comes together at the end quite nicely after all that filler. But who cares what F.B. Meyer said? Gimme Jesus in the red words brotha!

Sounds like something the majority of preachers would say.

Yes, the majority of preachers would agree that talking about Jesus the majority of the time would be a desirable thing to do. "He taught them out of the scriptures, the things about Himself"

I'd very much like to read some of your sermons. Can you post some of them here?

I thought you were looking for feedback. When I speak, it's not often and it's off the cuff. There is no text or notes or recordings or post-production.

That is true. Look at what the majority saddled this nation to for the past seven years?

    Amen Brother -
When I preach - I don't need to talk about politics.

Lets just Preach the Blessed Gospel of Jesus Christ.

I read the whole thing and I can't see what the big deal about tearing it apart is about. It may not be the most brilliant sermon in the world, but it was the truth. The guy is preaching about how narrow the real way is.

He uses an analogy from history to set an understanding, then he cited examples from the Old Testament, the New Testament, and then he shows several scriptures that show how people today are all on the wrong path and headed to destruction.

His whole conclusion was about salvation.

This man has a curse on him and doesn't even realize it. Hope he repents if not for his own sake but the people he speaks to.

Actually I wasn't looking for feedback per se. I was putting information out there I thought might be educational to the majority here who seem to believe that if a majority or the "consensus" among a majority agree something is true it's automatically true. It's not.

The majority has often been wrong.

Now that you've brought up teaching from the scriptures I thought I would take some time to look up some scriptures.

Hosea 4:6 My people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee,

Proverbs 28:2 For the transgression of a land many are the princes thereof: but by a man of understanding and knowledge the state thereof shall be prolonged.

Deuteronomy 1:13 Take you wise men, and understanding, and known among your tribes, and I will make them rulers over you.

1 Kings 3:9-10 Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?

And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.

Ezra 8:16 Then sent I for Eliezer, for Ariel, for Shemaiah, and for Elnathan, and for Jarib, and for Elnathan, and for Nathan, and for Zechariah, and for Meshullam, chief men; also for Joiarib, and for Elnathan, men of understanding.

    Ezra 8:18 And by the good hand of our God upon us they brought us a man of understanding, of the sons of Mahli, the son of Levi, the son of Israel; and Sherebiah, with his sons and his brethren, eighteen;

1 Chronicles 12:32 And of the children of Issachar, which were men that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do; the heads of them were two hundred; and all their brethren were at their commandment.

It could just be me but it seems God was looking for men that had "understanding of the times" that could instruct the Israelites on what they ought to do.

What do we hear from God's men (preachers) of understanding today?

"Go preach the gospel and vote republican" seems to be what the "majority" of preachers tell us today. Of course today's preachers can't openly tell anyone to vote republican or they'll be in danger of losing their 501c3 tax exempt status. Oh No!

In manners, morals and politics the majority is often wrong.
