I learned a valuable lesson last night on posting my opinion, interpretations, and thoughts on the Baptistboard - well, anywhere online.

I've had people before ask if they could quote me in various places and I've said yes. Of course, they can. I've quoted many posters here and elsewhere myself - in Sunday School mostly. I always give credit.

I've had someone not connected with the BB if they can quote an entire lengthy post of mine in their blog. Well, OK.

Last night, I was looking for commentary on a particular subject. I know what I believe about that subject and have the scripture to support it and years ago, put a lengthy post about it here, but I wanted to hear what others have to say. I always want to know what other have to say and see what scriptural information I may be missing or even misinterpreted. We all make mistakes in that area.

When I look for things that I've said here or things that YOU have said here in the past, I always go to Google and type in site:Baptistboard.com [insert member name] [insert catch phrase].

But last night as I was looking for other commentary, I just typed in the catch phrase.

As I was scrolling down the first page, the third entry was from a prolific blog of a woman that I didn't know. I saw a sentence in the description that looked familiar. I clicked to read the blog and the woman had quoted an entire post of mine from years ago (giving "Scarlett O" credit and linking to the Baptistboard.) to support her blog that day.

Although she agreed with me, there was one small section where she disagreed and said so and why.

I said all of that to say this very important (to me anyways) thing.

That small section where she disagreed with me, I disagreed with MYSELF. :tonofbricks:

I can remember writing that several years ago and thinking, "You know, I haven't worded that paragraph well, it's not coming out saying exactly what I intended for it to say. Oh, well, I'm in a hurry and anybody at the BB who talks to me will know what I meant."

Well, she didn't. She isn't from here. She just took me a literal face value. She had no idea that I was "in a mood" that day.

I think we all need to remember, myself included, that untold people across the world are reading what we say here. Search engines bring people here when looking at various topics.

We need to temper ourselves and say what we mean and mean what we say and be precise in our words.

Totally agree. People do find Baptist Board doing Google searches for any number of reasons. I believe that's how I found this place. This is one of the reasons I complain about shoddily written thread titles (because thread titles typically gain priority in Google searches.) Or why I ask for clarification. Or otherwise challenge posts that are written half-cocked or are inaccurate.

I shudder to think what the average unbeliever would think if they were sent to BB after doing a Google search on "What Baptists believe about:

false converts (or false ministers, etc.)
    contemporary music in church
    blacks being shot by cops
equal pay for women (or women in ministry, or women in sports)
President Obama (or fill in just about any political leader)
Gay __________ (fill in the blank)
CS Lewis, Rick Warren, or any other Christian that isn't "good enough".
Tattoos, facial hair, or body piercings
Women wearing slacks to church; men wearing shorts to church
open toed shoes on women (sorry, couldn't resist)

I came here on '02 following Helen from a now defunct site called the WhyFiles. It was a secular science site. She isn't here anymore and I so wish that she was.

    Getting back to the op,

People cannot be expected to be professional writers and to word things perfectly on this board or any other. Neither should anyone be expected too. There are people of all different levels of education and life's experiences on this board and those things effect how we respond and post. We need to remember that we all have different views and experiences and respond to each other in grace.
