Sometimes I really wonder why people bother. Oh i can understand couples with kids...they think they have to for the children (wifey and I did that) , we thought it the rightthing to do. But when they grew up and could do their own thing, we ceased going. I have also seen the old....they think they need to get right, kinda like paying up on an insurance policy. But I see lots of hypocrisy also...people who are Sunday Christians, and Monday they put Joe Stalin to shame.

So what is it...is it an obedience thing.....my mothers church made it an obligation and one threatning damnation if you didnt go! Or is it a fellowship thing... and there i see a rush for the door...very little, sit and talk. So im stumped....please help me to understand.

IN every church there is always room for one more hypocrite.

I dont see that as God honoring....we know we are all hypocrites but should we not be more about changing to be more like Christ and turning away from our sinful past?!?

I think this is a valid question. A questions that needs to be answered. There are too many people who go out of tradition or duty and churches are not the better for it.

I don't have a family and yet I go. Not for the fellowship so much because I work too much to sit down and talk with people much: playing the piano, teaching Sunday School, adult and children's choir practice .... etc.

    So why do I go?

    Honestly?

    • Because God has something for me to do there that reaches other people and allows Him to teach me - weekly.
    • I like the corporate prayer times on Wednesday nights. I LIKE praying out loud with other believers.
    • I - most of the time - "get something out of it". Even those days when I really don't want to crawl out of bed a 6:30 and be there by 7:45 for praise band practice. Even when my preacher is on his THIRD verse-by-verse round with John and Romans.
My church isn't always doing things the way that I like and I don't always agree with my pastor and I do get weary in doing some of the things I do there.

But I don't get weary of God.

I NEVER get tired of seeing what He has to teach me or where He leads me via the church.

E,W, & F, maybe you have gotten to focused on the church and lost focus on the God OF the church.

First we should go because it is commanded (Hebrews 10:25) We should also go because God has gifted us to serve in the local assembly using the gifts He provides (I Cor 12). We should be equipped by the leadership of the church for the work of the ministry (Ephesians 4:12). The church is called to glorify God (John 17:20-26) and win the lost (Matthew 28:18-20).

I dont understand that last comment. I guess i dont understand church either though. See, i can sit with my wife or my brother and have long and legnthy conversations about God, i can sit in my car alone and pray and feel his presence, I can listen to sermon audio or read a book by Martyn Lloyd Jones and feel the presence....but i dont get it in church.

And there you would be wrong. Its why i struggle so hard with it. Otherwise I would merely just blow it off.

My husband and I go to be around other believers. We enjoy the fellowship we get at church, and are very thankful that we found a good church since we moved to northern AZ. We also go to hear from Gods word, to see what was laid on the Pastors heart. We also go in obedience to God's word to not forsake the assembly. I know for my self I feel it when I have missed several Sundays for whatever reason, and then when I get back its like a refreshing spring.

Also....is a church supposed to go out to the unchurched, especially in the community or is the Great Commission merely a nice talking point? Are we to go to church but not extend ourselves to un-churched brethren.....and if there are churches doing it, please share with me what you are all doing. Hopefully we are being community active in addition to foreign ministries & VBS.

The scripture gives instructions for forming congregations. So how can we be in obedience to God's Word if we do not participate in what God has ordained?

Sure no church is perfect, but are we part of the problem or part of the solution? Or just complainers....

The problem is you set such stringent perfections of people who go to church no one church can ever meet your personal standard.

Isn't that what church is "supposed" to be about.....or are they a bunch of lollygaggers? Why aren't we busy in our own communities 1st.....cleaning up our own front yards....getting people right with God?

BTW, arent you a Marine Veteran......did your DI tell you to just take your time....get up when you want to.....excuse yourself from PT blah blah blah ....or did he tell you move your arse & sweat ....its good for you. Come on Rev, "adapt & overcome" ....now do it spiritually!

That's right....and I consider that a complement, setting high standards!

If you don't push yourself every day its just a wasted day:D

    Seeking perfection among the saints?!
That was originally a derisive slur against those who followed the teachings of John Wycliffe --the Lollards.

I go to church because it is what God calls believers to do. It is one of the places I'm fed, I can serve the Lord, I can be amongst other believers in one accord, worshipping our wonderful Creator. It is a place where I can invite people to learn more about God and the Christian walk, introduce them to some wonderful people (broken people but wonderful none-the-less). It is the place where the ordinances of the Christian faith can be practiced - baptism and the Lord' Supper. I go to church because I love being with my "family" at "home". :)

So you are looking at church for what you can "get"?
