There are so many ways that a believer can be involved in some form of gambling. Bets and wagers can be placed on online gambling sites; at local Indian casinos; through your states lotto programs; in office pools on "the BIG game;" in Vegas; at a Friday night poker party with your family or friends; and the list could go on.

As a believer, do you see anything wrong with placing a bet or playing a game of chance for money, or other stakes? When it comes to God and the Bible, does what you do in Vegas, really stay in Vegas?

If you have relevant or applicable scripture on this topic, please feel free to share it too.:wavey:

I believe it's a sin for a born again Christian to spend any of his money that he earned to waste it on any form of gambling, including the lottery.

Off hand, I can't say that there's a specific verse that states that "Thou shalt not buy a lottery ticket," I see this as a matter of stewardship of the money that God gives us to get wealth.

In the OT economy, which was primarily an agrarian type of economy, a man's material wealth was primarily determined by the size of his flocks as in Job 1:1-3; in fact this very passage tells us that Job was the richest man of his day in the region of Uz. Nowhere do you find Job participating in any form of what today we'd call gambling in order to get rich quick--something which is roundly condemned throughout Proverbs.

In Deuteronomy 8:18 we're told that it's the LORD thy God that gives us the ability to get wealth. Why would God say that gambling in order to get wealth is okay when His word condemns gambling?

Proverbs 10:22a reads, "The blessing of the LORD makes a person rich." If it's God who gives us the ability to get rich, not gambling, do you really suppose He'd approve of gambling when His very Word condemns gambling?

Jesus Christ Himself in Matthew 25:14-30 gives us the parable of the unwise steward. Jesus condemned this unwise steward because the money that the man who was about to travel to a far country--which is symbolic of Christ returning to heaven and then coming back again at the Judgment Seat of Christ where His servants [We who are born again.] are judged according to what we did with the money He gave us--condemns His unfaithful servant because rather than using his money to make more money.

He told the unwise steward that, if nothing else, he should have at least deposited that money in the bank where it'd gain at least some interest on the steward's deposit.

The other servants were praised because they put the money that He gave them to work. As a result, Jesus praised the faithful stewards (Matt. 25:21 & 23) by telling them that they were faithful in a few things so now He's going to allow them to "enter into the joy of thy lord."

Notice that the wise stewards were praised for investing the money He gave them in that both of them, not for gambling with it--something that usually the only ones that gain any money are the ones that own the casinos.

Again, I seriously doubt Jesus will one day praise us for gambling with the money He allowed us to gain rather than making wise investments to order to increase that amount of money--some of which we can then give to our local church or to some other worthwhile Christian ministry that He may put on our hearts to donate in order that His Word may go forth to this lost and dying world.

"A little leaven leavens the whole lump"

"Whatsoever is not of Faith is sin"

"Be not conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of the mind"

Check them out in context. Similar arguments can be made for beverage alcohol.

Not many real "Teetotalers" left. Will The Lord find The Faith when He returns?

Who can give permission to sin? We have no excuses. See I Cor. 3--the part about wood, hay and stubble.

    Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

The problem with your arguments (on gambling, lottery, alcohol) is that you can't show in scripture where any of them are sin. Your arguments start off with the assumption that they are, but you can't jump straight there. Prove they are sin first, then your arguments hold merit.

Even investing money is a gamble! Look how many people lost money in their IRA and/or other retirement funds due to the economy a few years ago. Was that a sin to have your money in those accounts?

A few months ago, I bought a snake hose ***. Seemed like a good ideal, but in the past few weeks it has developed several leaks - due to the material used. Was that a gamble that I took?

If at the end of the month - after all my bills are paid - and I have one dollar left over - I could either buy a candy bar or a lottery ticket- What is the difference -

Now Matt did say "Done in moderation, there is no issue." The question is: Where is the line for moderation?

I go to the State Fair each year. There was a game - where you hit a platform to send a (fake) frog into the game area - if it lands on a specif spot - you win a prize. I would play that game - not for the prize - but because it was fun watching the dumb frog flying in the air with the greatest of ease. - Now, if I won, I would take the prize. Was that gambling - would that be a sin - or for playing any other midway game?

How about a raffle ticket for a good cause? (say helping with medical bills) Would that be sin?

*** the link is not to advertise - but to show what I bought

There is nothing in scripture that says gambling is a sin. Many gambling houses are full of all kinds of sin. I see no reason why a Christian would want to expose themselves to that kind of atmosphere. They don't call Vegas sin city for nothing.

Purchasing lottery tickets in and of itself is not sin. Pinning your hopes on winning millions is.

    Agreed.

    Nope, but it is stupid.

Hey, most lottery winners lost the first couple thousand times they played.

Is it any more stupid than the thousands of other ways people spend their money on frivolous items?

Yes, it is more stupid. With a 12 million to 1 chance of winning you might as well drive down the interstate and throw dollar bills out your window. At least with a frivolous purchase you own something.

Ah, but they aren't all 12 million to 1 chances...that's just the big winner. Plenty of better odds out there.

I purchase flowers for my "garden" all the time. I'm a terrible gardener and end up killing them all the time. I'm left with nothing. I do get the enjoyment from purchasing and having the flowers for a short time.

Who are we to judge whether someone's enjoyment of something is stupid?

We will give an account of a every farthing plus idle words and deeds. That is why we need repentance and forgiveness every day. Our flesh is still depraved, including our minds.

"Whatsoever is not of Faith is sin" still covers most anything we may be doing on any given day.

    Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

Have you repented of your comments in this post?

    https://www.baptistboard.com/showpost.php?p=2255380&postcount=16

Those comments were not of Faith, so they are sin.

So if I buy a candy bar (that I dont need) instead of putting that dollar into the Lottie Moon missions offering - then I have sinned?

    None. Zero. Zilch.

If God wanted to say "Thou shalt not gamble", he would have. The only issue to arise with gambling is just like anything else, and that's when you allow it to become an idol that controls you.

Idolatry is the key. Otherwise, we will start creating new sins out of thin air.

    Personal houses too.

You could probably say the same about any major city.

It may not be a sin, but IMO it is poor stewardship which in itself is a sin.
