This is so very very sad.

Obviously, there is something very wrong for so many people in a small congregation to go along with such a practice! I pray for the younger son, that he may come to know Christ, in a healing personal relationship, and come out from under whatever false teaching is there! I pray this for all of them too, but especially for the children who are utterly blameless.

Huh? This son was 19 years old, why did he just sit there and take it? He's a grown man.

The parents sure don't look like they're playing with a full deck.

My post wasn't clear. I was referring to the parents thinking they could beat salvation into the young man.

This happened about 15 minutes from me. It was a cult. Folks lived in an old school building. The local TV stationed interviewed a young man who was friends with the boy who was killed. There is absolutely no connection between this so-called church and Word of Life Fellowship, camps or Bible Institute in Schroon Lake NY

Am glad to read this. Word of Life used to be a pretty good program. Hoped that this place was not associated with it.

Yeah, we're supposed to judge by their fruit and it sure seems cultish, just by the outcomes... Man.

Wow! This is terrible. What kind of parents would do this? God bless this young man and I hope he gets far, far away from these people.

They beat him to death. He is as far away as he can possibly get.

I agree. I hope he doesn't suffer the fate of his older brother, and I sincerely pray that he meets Jesus in TRUTH!

He was abused all his life. It was the only life he knew. Cult members, especially those who are raised from very young have no understanding of how to escape. They do just sit there and take it.

They reported on the local news that the young man who died may have been trying to leave the cult. Sick, sick people.

This is what I heard. But think of this, I doubt the boy would take 10 hours of beating without just saying he would stay in order to make them stop, even after an hour. So it appears they were taking great pleasure n torturing him and his brother.

I'm not sure the parents were equipped with independent thought. The media seems to be trying to paint them as villains, but what I see here are serious indicators of mental illness and oppression. I'm glad they aren't the only ones being charged, at least. And certainly, they failed in their duties to their son, and thus should be charged. But perhaps what they need is mental help, rather than villainization and prison.
I'm praying they come to know Jesus the Healer in truth, even if they spend the rest of their lives in jail. I'm praying for their younger son, that he can walk into his adult life, heal, and even thrive.

With all due respect, the "mental illness" card has been overplayed and is getting worse in this country every day. Of all the horrific deeds done in this world I would wager less the one percent has anything to do with mental illness and 99% everything to do with conscience willful sin. Jesus never spoke of mental illness. Everything was black and white, good and evil, children of God and children of the devil. One letting themselves to be led by a hate spewing pastor is just as guilty as the pastor himself.

I whole-heartedly agree that they made horrendous choices, but disagree about the conscious willful sin. I believe most people who are in sin (whether christian or not) see themselves as righteous or as being right. If a lot of people understood that they are sinning, I believe they would seek change. Most people honestly believe they are justified. Most people are honestly that decieved.

Scriptural evidence that people feel their sinful actions are not sinful:
    Jeremiah 2:35 (one of many)

Perhaps you and I can agree that mental illness is a spiritual issue. Jesus spoke of binding broken hearts and setting captives free. He only spoke harshly to the religious zealots who kept people from getting close to God in spirit and truth. I'm sure he would have tough things to say to the leaders of this cult, but am not so sure he would condemn people who are obviously broken. But coming to the truth can be very painful, and it's only in truth that we are freed. I do not envy these parents, and the pain they will go through when the truth finally dawns on them.
