Personal Information Disclosure

    In another thread, a suggestion was made that someone's refusal to disclose certain personal details was motivated by shame. I have also read posts written by some that disagree with keeping one's Profile Page private.

    Regarding Privacy, what publicly-viewable personal details do people who post on this site owe others? My opinion is none.

    Nobody owes anyone else personal information. I'm pretty open about myself and who I am online (without sharing anything potentially dangerous), but that is my choice. I don't have to be.
    People can have many reasons for choosing not to disclose information.

    It is possible to respond to questions regarding our personal history or accomplishments without divulging information that the public dissemination of which might cause problems.

    I am 70 years old. That is pretty common knowledge. Not sensitive information.
    I am a retired pastor. Not sensitive information.
    I also taught in both bible college and seminary. Not sensitive information.
    I worked my way though college and seminary, and as a tent maker in the early years of my ministry as a Sheriff's Deputy. Not sensitive information.
    I served in the US Army during Vietnam and after. Not sensitive information.
    I was a pilot for 49 years. Not sensitive information.
    I have been married to the most wonderful woman in the world for 40 years. Not sensitive information.
    We lost a son 38 years ago. Not sensitive information.

    So, answering some very non-specific questions does not endanger my privacy. But it does establish a skill set that gives additional credence in certain matters under discussion. I don't understand why people would avoid such non-specific disclosures. Unless they are trying to conceal something (or the lack thereof) germane to the discussion. :)

    That poster also accused the poster of being ashamed of said previous service or lack thereof due to their reluctance to share which was uncalled for.

    Everybody manages their online persona as they see fit and it would seem like common courtesy to respect that.

    What information anyone wants to share is up to them, and nobody else. There are very few persons who know how to get in touch with us, that we know only on the internet.

    It is definitely that way since my wife knew someone who ended up with a cyber stalker, who even figured out where she lived.

    When making a comment - it is not unreasonable to indicate how you might have inside info.
    For example - if I were to state "I see no problem with having 4 tires by a very slight different size." If challenge - I should indicated my expertise in auto mechanics.

    Perhaps it is not unreasonable to offer, but I think that it is unreasonable to expect it in a publicly-viewable setting. Better to request it in a Private Message and respect the individual's answer if it is denied.

    I will say though if you have openly posted personal info anywhere else on the internet, especially if it is tied to your username, then you have nothing to complain about if it is posted here.
