Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad: Cruz must be defeated

"Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad would like to see Ted Cruz defeated, he said on Tuesday.

The Iowa governor, whose powerful network of supporters is a prized political commodity, was speaking to reporters at the Iowa Renewable Fuels Summit. Branstad's son Eric is leading efforts to portray the Texas senator as hostile to ethanol, a narrative Cruz has been trying to stifle in recent weeks.

Asked if he’d like the Texas senator to lose, Governor Branstad said, "Yes."...."

So, help me out--how is wanting someone to lose an endorsement of someone specific?

Don't kid yourself, farmers are on corporate welfare. Cruz says let the market decide the fate of ethanol--can't be done because ethanol can't compete in a free market. Trump represents the status quo on the agriculture policy question.

Cruz has three strikes against him: he is a Southern Baptist, he is a conservative, and he is a Cuban dissident in an age that idolizes Fidel Castro and Che.

The people will speak soon and we have to trust the wisdom of the common man to loosen the establishment grip on the two political parties. Not happy with the pleasures of wealth, rich Americans want to run every aspect of life in America.

Rubio opposes the renewable fuel standard also, but Trump has Trumped them both by giving it his support. So I don't see them leaving Cruz for Rubio over the issue, do you?

That's his way of saying I don't care what happens to you Iowans and your ethanol industry.

Four strikes. He was born in Canada.

Not sure what a birther is. The man was born in Canada. I personally don't believe he should be eligible to be President and personally would not support him for that reason.

There are a lot of folks who feel likewise.

But there are a list of other reasons why I wouldn't support him too.

You are well-informed--I lost track of Rubio on that issue. Rubio has a lot of talent but his basic ideology is not highly developed in my opinion. No, Rubio, a Catholic, is a little out of it in the Midwest in my opinion, which is not worth anything. If Cruz has an organization in Iowa and Trump does not, then Trump is in trouble, which would explain his negative attacks on Cruz for not being liked by people such as Mitch McConnell, whom you know better than anyone else, so you tell me what you think of Cruz's fight against the establishment. Ethanol probably is a big issue in central and northern Indiana which grows so much corn.

You know, I like Cruz and he is young but there is a good mind in him. What is your opinion? When is the Kentucky primary? As I keep saying, Hoosiers have no vote in this since it will be over by March and the Hoosier primary is in May.

Well, you are lining up with Trump on this issue of birth--but then Trump is making inroads with the Democrat rank and file.

His basic ideology is determined by his owners. It's what they want.

I actually like him too, a lot. It's just that early on he came off as very hawkish which I'm very leery of. I think maybe he's toned that down since then. He even admits the ME would be better off had we left Saddam in power.

KY primary in May sometime, probably first Tuesday.

You know that I am just throwing out my personal feelings on this issue and that I don't pretend any expertise, but the Cubans are very proud of both Rubio and Cruz--imagine two Cuban refugees from dictatorships and communism running for President! Rubio strikes me as emotional at times, especially on immigration, where he was wrong, but Rubio is a Republican and he is an American patriot who longs for freedom for the Cuban people suffering so much under brutal communism. I think that Rubio will mature and be more useful as time goes by.

My understanding is that Branstad did not endorse Trump. He simply refused to endorse Cruz.
