"Gov. Terry E. Branstad of Iowa, a Republican and the longest-serving governor in American history, is something of a guardian of the Iowa presidential caucuses.

So when he appeared Thursday at a breakfast sponsored by The Wall Street Journal, he had an opportunity to criticize Donald J. Trump for skipping Thursday night’s debate, the only one Iowa Republicans will host before next week’s caucuses.

Mr. Branstad not only declined to bash Mr. Trump for his decision to hold a separate event in Des Moines at the same time as the debate, but he also marveled at what he described as the Trump phenomenon and predicted a record Republican turnout on Monday......."

So not criticizing someone is "warming up to them even more." Okey Dokey.

    From the article:
Mr. Branstad responded, “I’m not going to try to pass judgment on any of the candidates.”

    Wow! What an endorsment!

Lol, yea, a subtle one; combined with his anti-endorsement of Cruz it probably amounts to a WOW! :)

I can't see that skipping debates hurts anyone. I am so happy that we are entering Stage 2 of the contest where the media becomes less important and the Republican voter makes the decision.

I think that the ethanol issue is underrated and is a factor in the corn belt. Farmers have been corrupted by 80 years of government control of agriculture. Trump is not going to challenge the status quo on very much.

As for the debates, the GOP should go to some sort of Lincoln-Douglas format, or a real debate such as the one where Lincoln defeated the Democrat slave apologist Douglas. The debates should be about issues and the press should only suggest general topics and keep time and allow the candidates to bring up the opponent's past stances. The press only wants to win points for themselves at the expense of the candidates, which does not allow for an intelligent discussion of the issues.
