I’m sure this has been asked more than once, but the landscape has changed on the BB. I was just wondering how many military (current and former) we have here. What services are represented?

Just wondering, do any of you use the VA hospitals? If so, how are they in your area?

(I'm wondering as that is where I am this morning for an appointment. It's beautiful outside, but inside is deteriorating. I suppose they simply do not have the resources to keep up the facilities. I've always received good treatment when I've had to come here....which is not often).

Fayetteville is abysmal. Durham isn't too bad. My brother had some major work done there after the Columbia, SC VA messed him up. He says Ashville, NC isn't bad.

Oh, and personally I would exhaust every other option available before using one. The Fayetteville VA cut a mole off of me sometime around 2005, they still haven't let me know if it was malignant or not.

I use the Syracuse VA - I have received excellent care
Was just there this morning for my eye apt, they told me
my glasses will be in a couple of weeks.

Scheduling appointment - not a problem - never an excessive amount of time

I have been a VA patient for around 20 years. (I am a disabled vet, service connected.)

Until 2012 I received my care from the San Diego VAMC and clinic. Excellent doctors and excellent service. They took very good care of me.

Since 2012 I have been with the Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System in McAllen (Primary Care physician) and Harlingen (Cardiologist, Dermatologist, Audiologist, Neurologist). Again, excellent care. Both the McAllen and Harlingen facilities are brand new.

I have never received anything other than top notch care from the VA. Admittedly, at least some of that may be due to my status as a disabled vet with a service connected disability, but the care is still excellent. No complaints from me. :)

I'm in the same boat (except the 20 yr part....I am a disabled vet, service connected) and have had an excellent treatment. I was initially surprised how rundown some of the facilities are, but also very surprised at the quality of care I have had even in my limited experience. I am also retired so I have a bit of a choice (VA or Tricare) and am trying to work through which option is best. It depends on the situation (I have an hour drive to the VA hospital but I do have a VA clinic in town - which I actually like better than my primary civilian doctor). Just thinking about my options.

One big problem with the VA hospitals is that you can't choose what hospital to be treated at, or what doctor you get.

In the Providence of God, the San Francisco VA system has developed a great relationship with the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). UCSF is a post graduate medical school. So, most of my first line providers are doctors and RN\Nurse Practitioners doing their residencies under the supervision of the VA regulars. This means SFO has the manpower to provide the service required of it.

OK, I have to admit I was never in the military, almost but got turned down for being gay back then JK. But I was turned down for medical reasons.

I did marry into a military family, a retired officer no less. That experience sure gave me a new appreciation for those of you who did serve, and I hope you never had the misfortune of serving under someone like him. I know another retired officer of the same rank, and he seems to be pretty close to a clone.

Maybe it is the way they are taught to do things, but I always found it amazing that no one "accidentally" took him out. It says a lot for the type of guys/gals he had under his command.

I will also take this time to say thanks to you guys/gals who did serve, and were there to protect me and our country.
