How in the world will we ever hope to understand the positions held by others if the threads are closed before consensus is reached? Just because one or two become aggressively argumentative does not mean all participants in the thread are doing so.

This is a debate forum. Closing a thread is not debate. It is counter debate. Especially when the thread is closed by a Moderator who is the one who has become aggressively argumentative.

Yeah, what's up with closing a thread for merely reaching X amount of pages? Seems weird.

But thinking a page limit is the only thing preventing a consensus also seems to be wishful thinking in the extreme.

Not to mention that page length is a function you can adjust in the "settings." Where one person will see 10 pages I may see only 3. It depends on how many posts I want to be displayed on the same page. So, the "X amount of pages" is entirely arbitrary based on the person's settings.
Which is why I don't think that. But an open, honest discussion is more likely to bear fruit than the "take my ball and go home" of closing down a discussion is likely to do. :)

Like I said, I agree the discussions should be allowed to run on as long as they remain civil, but I don't think a consensus on eschatology, the nature of free will, what Bible version is best, or the question of whether or not beans belong in chili is being stymied by a limit on thread pages.

I came here hoping to learn, so I read more than I post. And from what I can tell, some posters are engaged in inquisition, not discussion.

I may have to retract the above statement. I have looked through the available settings on the new software and can't find (which may be my fault, or it may no longer exist) the ability to select the number of posts on a page.

However, I have also read completely through the rules and can't find a "X number of pages" rule, so, even if we can no longer set the number of posts we see on a page, the closing of a thread after X number of pages still seems to be arbitrary. :)

Nor do I (as I said previously). But one thing I do know is that if we cease discussing the issue all possibility of progress, no matter how small, will be stopped. :)

Unfortunately, that is true. But we must never allow the inquisitors to control the discussion.

Have we considered the possibility that those who misbehave do so with the intent of getting the discussion shut down because they cannot offer a cogent argument to support their position? :)

If there is an element of interpretation, then it comes down to each side claiming the other's interpretation is wrong, which is where most of these threads end up. Then come the accusations that so-and-so cannot discern meaning, or so-and-so is too ignorant to see the obvious meaning. So it is beyond cogently supporting a position.

So there are disagreements, some of which are centuries old. Again, I don't see them being resolved here, but it's possible I am wrong and they will be resolved.

And I'll restate, that I am far more interested in reading a post stated as "Well, I believe X because of verses A and B," instead of "You're wrong, and I'm right."

Which is why I believe every man called to preach is also called to prepare. The more we learn about the grammar and syntax of the Greek language the less likely we are to make such errors of interpretation.

What often happens is that a participant in the discussion relies on the opinions of a commentator who knows as little about Greek as the participant. In which case the one who actually understands what the Greek is saying is at a loss to convince the opposition that his commentator is speaking out of ignorance.

The same can be said of those who rely on questionable authorities such as Strong's Lexicon, and even Thayers. They seem unaware that Thayer denied biblical inerrancy, and that his work was proven to be quite wrong in many places by Gustav Adolf Deissmann's work with the Egyptian papyri which revolutionized New Testament and Koine Greek Lexicography with the publication of his Bible Studies: Contributions Chiefly from Papyri and Inscriptions to the History of the Language, the Literature, and the Religion of Hellenistic Judaism and Primitive Christianity published in 1901 (2nd edition 1909) and also Light from the Ancient East: the New Testament Illustrated by Recently Discovered Texts of the Graeco-Roman World London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1910.

Yet, somehow, these discredited "experts" still seem to be trotted out to support erroneous meanings and usages of Greek terms.

Funny you should mention that, those are some of the more enjoyable threads and a big reason of why I sought out this forum.

First of all I know it is at the moderators discretion to close a thread... Now what the parameters are and the boundaries of each thread I have no idea... I would say maybe 100 posts or is there a time limit?... Should a thread that has been inactive and dormant for a long period of time be closed?... You can always extend a thread even when it is closed by using the original thread name and just add continued or part 2... That way the thread is never closed and the discussion/debate can go on and on... Or is there a rule against that?... Maybe a moderator could enlighten us on that?... Also I believe that if a thread gets out of hand it should be closed and if enough members report the thread at the discretion of the moderator their decision is to close it or let it stand... That's all I have to say!... Just thought of something else as a courtesy... Should a moderator further explain why he closed a thread?... That's all!... Brother Glen

Personally, as long as the thread is going along at a pretty good clip, it should not be closed, regardless the page # it reaches. Once it dies off, then close the thread and move along.

I agree but is a post dead after lying dormant 3 years?... It was never closed!... It was started again yesterday and it had a poll to that closed March 24, 2013... So you can't vote even if you wanted to... I guess this post was just asleepSleep and then someone woke it up!... Brother Glen
