How in the world will we ever hope to understand the positions held by others if the threads are closed before consensus is reached? Just because one or two become aggressively argumentative does not mean all participants in the thread are doing so.

This is a debate forum. Closing a thread is not debate. It is counter debate. How can we persuade people of the Truth if the Truth is not allowed to be presented?

I admit that I do not understand why you linked understanding with consensus.

From what I can tell, very few members here are interested in understanding the position of others. And the only consensus they seek is for their "opponents" to hang their heads in defeat and sya "you win."

I disagree. I am by nature a teacher. My goal on these forums is to cause others to critically examine what they believe, and why they believe it, and see of their position can stand intense scrutiny.

My goal is not to humiliate anyone, but to come to a better understanding of what they believe and why their believe it.

And, if that proves to be inadequate, to help them see a better, more logical, more reasonable, and ultimately a more biblical way to look at the issue.

I know that probably doesn't happen very often, especially among those who hold a position emotionally rather than logically, but as a wise old preacher once told me when I was still a very young man, "You will only win about 1 in 10 that you talk to. So talk to 10 times as many!" :)

When I first joined up, your posts and the posts of a few others were an immense help in understanding other viewpoints. But then the usual suspects show up, and I abandon the conversation.

One thing I think happens when you have a thread that is very long is that it inhibits others from joining in - kind of like when there is a long conversation going on and you walk into the middle of it. Oftentimes, it's totally off the topic of the OP or it becomes just a tit-for-tat kind of a thread and that's not really productive and I know when I see that kind of a thread, although the title was interesting and even the OP was interesting and something I'd want to chime in on, I don't because it's gone 10 pages before I was able to get into it and it's now on another topic all together.. Sometimes it's best to start a new thread which would encourage others to hop in and give their two cents.

What if the other man’s view is “better, more logical, more reasonable, and ultimately more biblical” but it contradicts your own view? How do you decide what is a “better, more logical, more reasonable, and ultimately a more biblical” view? Hopefully this thread will not be closed before you get an opportunity to answer my questions and to defend your thinking. :)

Then I change my view. How do I determine that? I "study to show myself approved unto God, a workman who needs not be ashamed, rightly understanding the word of truth."

There are many instances in my spiritual growth when I have changed my understanding of certain issues. When I am convinced the bible teaches something that is different from what I believe I change what I believe and stand just as firmly on my new found ground as I did on the former. :)

I should have taken the issue of closing threads up with the Mods before publicly posting. Mea culpa. Thread closed.
