A Supreme Court nomination battle that was ignited on Saturday with the death of Justice Antonin Scalia has given Democrats an explosive new issue that could bolster their chances of regaining majority control of the U.S. Senate.

The impact could be felt most acutely in "swing" states, where Republicans are trying to hold onto Senate seats, political strategists and analysts said. The high stakes are also expected to prompt greater voter turnout that could favor Democrats.

Manley noted Republicans are facing tough races for Senate seats in swing states such as Ohio, Florida, New Hampshire, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania and could find themselves in even tighter spots because of the divisive fight over Scalia's replacement.

These Republican candidates, who either already serve in the Senate or are vying for open seats, have to especially thread the needle in their politically divided states on social issues, like abortion rights, that so dominate Supreme Court confirmation fights.

Democrats already enjoyed an advantage in the November Senate elections, having to defend only 10 seats while 24 Republican seats are up for grabs in the 100-member chamber.

Democrats need a net gain of five seats to win back the majority they lost in the 2014 elections

Yep. That's why a couple of us said in another thread that Obama can really do so damage to the GOP's chances of holding the Senate based upon the person he nominates.

If he nominates one of those 97-0 earlier confirmed persons, and the GOP led Senate filibusters, they are gonna look like obstructionists.

Of course at this point it will hold true with anyone because they've announced that they will.

That's why this could backfire on them. They are gonna mess around and Hillary is gonna be President and they will have lost control of the Senate.

Then there will be nothing they can do.

Agree. Also if he appoints the Attorney General, Loretta Lynch, it puts them in a real bind. It would be very hazardous in an election year to oppose an African American woman who is very qualified.

They were far too quick to show their hand and already they look like obstructionists. I have seen where several Republican senators who are in tight races are beginning to rethink their stance. After all to an office holder the most important thing in life is to be re-elected and that many mean voting for an Obama nominee.
I am going out on a limb here. I predict that Bernie Sanders will be the next president.

I think that if Bernie Sanders is the Democrat nominee, the Republicans will take the White House.

First,he's a Socialist. There's no getting around that elephant in the room. If you want to make the folks in the GOP forget all about their infighting and come out in mass numbers in support of whoever the GOP nominee is, nominate a socialist. The Dems can then kiss the White House and the SCOTUS appointments goodbye.

Second, he's Jewish. It will inevitably be an issue in any general election.

I honestly think you are wrong in that analysis. Nothing he has proposed has been way out in left field. He and Hillary agree on something like 93% of all issues. He is attracting tons of young people. I believe he will attract many of the Hispanic votes. While Hispanics are often quite conservative the GOPs stance on immigration has driven them away. Frankly I think he is more of a populist. His message has been consistent as long as he has been in office wanting to protect the little man from big business. Here is a typical quote by Sanders:

Yes he is Jewish. I think the country as a whole has moved beyond that prejudice. Sure there are some who will not vote for him because he is Jewish, but he will attract some because he is Jewish and the vast majority of young adults will simply not care one way or the other in that regard.

Regardless, it is going to be an interesting race.

I think the Republicans need to quit their whining. There is a Supreme Court seat open, Obama is President, Obama gets to nominate someone. If the person is qualified scholarly, he or she should be confirmed. Stop the crying!!!!! God is on His throne!

I agree. Also the GOP should realize that what goes around comes around. A super-majority is needed to confirm a nominee to the SC. No party has a super majority and none will have in my lifetime.

And why should we vote for anyone who would do that.

Who said we should? Mitch McConnell has made sure Obama gets everything he wants. Why would he stop now?
