Hispanic church growth is a key ministry any denomination should support moving forward. This is an important move. The church where I'm serving is currently supporting two Hispanic church planters who are in process of starting two new churches while also attending seminary.

What does that have to do with giving a discount based on race? Which is racist.

I believe it is done online. If that is the case, then we are probably talking distance education from Latin American countries.

Now consider 2 big issues: First, there is hardly any decent seminary education in Latin America, certainly none with SBTS's reputation. I've lived in Honduras for 4 years. I know. The church situation there is horrible. To be evangelical is to be charismatic. There are not many flourishing Baptist churches. Some. But not many. And I know the second even better. They are poor. They are dirt poor... as in many live in huts with no floor but dirt. So for these guys to afford education, they need a reduced cost.

After perusing through the article (in Spanish), it appears that the target audience is reaching the Spanish speaking world of Latin America.

I love this and applaud SBTS for doing this.

It's a two-fer for Jerome: He gets to slam Southern Baptists and Calvinists in a single post.

It can't be racist, my census forms all said being Hispanic was an ethnicity, not a race.Biggrin

But at some level, if you want more of something, you subsidize it.

It isn't racist to offer a scholarship based on ethnicity or socio-economic state or any of a number of factors. There are plenty of scholarship available to all students at SBTS, this is another kind of scholarship that aids a specific class of students. Southern Baptists have always offered scholarships for student of specific minority groups and to women as well. That isn't racism.

I applaud, loudly, this move and believe it will aid the growth of the Kingdom of God.
