Reaganomics was a political tool that Reagan never followed. He condemned Carter for deficit spending. However, when Carter left office the national debt was 591 billion. When Reagan left office the national debt was $990 billion, a 68% increase. Trickle down never worked, except for the rich. Reagan definitely did not reduce government spending ... and his administration was filled with corruption.

Here is a good article on Reaganomics:

We cannot blame the debt on just the President - Congress (both houses) are just as responsible- regardless of party
Question is - how much "horse trading" is done. IE- I will vote for your pork if you vote for mine. Its the old issue of how much bacon can I bring home to make sure I get re-elected.

But the rev did have a good saying up there.

Your numbers are way off. Please give us a link so we can see where you got the numbers.

Yep. I always believe that you've got to look at who is controlling Congress and who actually worked to better the country. Obama's Congress has done everything within it's power to keep him ineffective. But they said they would do this so I don't see how anyone can rightly complain about what Obama has done without complaining about the Congress who said they weren't gonna let him do anything to the point of making him a one term President.

Actually, my numbers are spot on.

    From: https://mises.org/library/myths-reaganomics

How well did Reagan succeed in cutting government spending, surely a critical ingredient in any plan to reduce the role of government in everyone's life? In 1980, the last year of free-spending Jimmy Carter the federal government spent $591 billion. In 1986, the last recorded year of the Reagan administration, the federal government spent $990 billion, an increase of 68%. Whatever this is, it is emphatically not reducing government expenditures.

The next, and admittedly the most embarrassing, failure of Reaganomic goals is the deficit. Jimmy Carter habitually ran deficits of $40-50 billion and, by the end, up to $74 billion; but by 1984, when Reagan had promised to achieve a balanced budget, the deficit had settled down comfortably to about $200 billion, a level that seems to be permanent, despite desperate attempts to cook the figures in one-shot reductions.

    You said:

These numbers describe the US budget, not the national debt.

The US budget increasing is not necessarily a bad thing, so long as revenues keep pace and the deficit and therefore the debt does not increase.

Not sure where you got the idea is describes the US budget.
My quote said, "However, when Carter left office the national debt was 591 billion. When Reagan left office the national debt was $990 billion, a 68% increase." [I emphasized national debt.] As you can see the quote says national debt not US budget. The national debt increased dramatically under Reagan.

Different topic there ... and Reagan does not come off looking good there either. In fact he looks terrible.

    From: http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2011/02/05/142288/reagan-centennial/

Reagan enacted a major tax cut his first year in office and government revenue dropped off precipitously. Despite the conservative myth that tax cuts somehow increase revenue, the government went deeper into debt and Reagan had to raise taxes just a year after he enacted his tax cut. Despite ten more tax hikes on everything from gasoline to corporate income, Reagan wasnever able to get the deficit under control.

Got the idea when you said:

Money spent implies a budget. When you look up the budget for those years those number are indeed the US budget.

Yes, and those numbers are not the national debt numbers, they are the budget numbers.

One major expense that would be on Reagan's budget was rebuilding the military.

In particular, the Navy. But Carter had eviscerated our entire military and made them ineffective with huge morale problems.

A leader was desperately needed and we found one in Reagan.
