    Yaaa, team. Many vets render a hand salute because they think putting their right hand over their heart is just too much fifth grade. And many onlookers think they are just being wannabe warriors. Well, according to this military.com article, they are entitled not to look like a fifth grader.

    Now you know you can tell any punctilious pendent that what your doing is entirely legal and appropriate. Dollars to donuts said person will be either some rabid anti-militarist who dislikes any sign of the military or a old senior non-com/field grade officer who didn't get the word.

    I did not know this... I felt even though not in uniform it would be an insult to others who were... I never knew there was a law that covered it either... I've saluted many times while in the Marines... Probably more than most because I was Military Police and stood gate guard and saluting came with the territory... Will this former Vietnam Vet pop a salute next time the flag is presented or passes by or will he just cover his heart?... lt is seven years late but now I got the word... Watch it I'm ready to pop one out... click... snap!... Brother Glen

    I was in when that became law. After being in for so long, saluting any other way just seems wrong.

    (A)
    individuals in uniform should give the military salute at the first note of the anthem and maintain that position until the last note;
    (B)
    members of the Armed Forces and veterans who are present but not in uniform may render the military salute in the manner provided for individuals in uniform; and
    (C)
    all other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, and men not in uniform, if applicable, should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart;

    Covers those in other types of uniform, e.g. police, fire, etc.
