Reminiscent of events at San Francisco's Hamilton Square church some years ago, attendees at Sacramento's Verity Baptist ran a gauntlet getting into services this morning. The church was surrounded by hundreds of protesters upset by the preaching of Pastor Roger Jimenez:

Unlike Hamilton Square (which another member, I'm sure, can tell us about) the protesters here did not prevent people from entering the church and did not attack the church building.

I would think that the provocation in this case was greater than at Hamilton Square. Pastor Jimenez last week proclaimed that:
“There’s no tragedy. I wish the government would round them all up, put them up against a firing wall, put a firing squad in front of them, and blow their brains out.”

A succinct declaration of Christian love and ethics.

The proximate cause for the HSBC riot was Lou Shelton of Family Values Coalition speaking in the Sunday Evening Service. As best as I can remember, there hadn't been any significant outside publicity of his speaking.

They smeared stuff on the doors last week. And after the protest the business park's owner took action to evict the church.

Attendees face the gauntlet: one young gal waves a Bible above her head as she's escorted past the protesters, whose words force a church lady to cover her son's ears.

Oh no! The father in the second photo above attacked a protester and a lawsuit has been filed:

    Sacramento Bee

"After the service when parishioners were leaving, Fritz approached them to speak. 'Why are you teaching your children violence?' the suit said he asked. It states that Fritz then said to a 'young parishioner' that 'Sometimes when we’re older we learn our parents are wrong. I don’t deserve to die. If they allow you internet access you should do your own research.'"

"A female parishioner told Fritz not to speak to the child.
Fritz began to respond, according to the suit, when defendant Johnny Cervantes III said, 'Don’t (expletive) talk to my wife,' and allegedly 'lunged forward and placed his hands' and pushed Fritz."
