Mass shootings stopped in Australia after strict new gun laws passed, researchers reported Wednesday.

And overall deaths from firearms have fallen since the 1997 law, which banned certain semi-automatic and pump-action weapons and forced owners to sell them back to the government, the teamreported in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

"Following enactment of gun law reforms in Australia in 1996, there were no mass firearm killings through May 2016," Simon Chapman of the University of Sydney and colleagues wrote.

They say they can't prove the gun control measures caused the fall in gun-related deaths, but say they are worth discussing.

Themass shooting that prompted Australia's crackdownhappened in Tasmania, in 1996, when 28-year-old Martin Bryant shot and killed 35 people in a café. Another 23 were injured.

Just weeks before, a gun enthusiastshot and killed 16 screaming first-gradersand their teacher in an elementary school in Dunblane, Scotland. Britain enacted a handgun ban soon afterwards.

Australia already had strict rules about handguns, but a revolted public backed wider reforms that banned rapid-fire long guns and forced the buyback of nearly 660,000 weapons.

Chapman's team analyzed death statistics to see what effect the laws have had.

As to mass shootings, yes they have seen a drop. But please check out the overall crime statistics. Just as in the UK, violent crime has continued to increase. As has homicide rates. Also, contrasting different countries using the per capita method does not take into account overall population nor the number of high population centers, urban areas and the inherent problems therein.
There are more Americans killed on the roads every year by drunk drivers than the total homicide rate by firearms. No one is suing Budweiser, and no one is demanding another prohibition. Odd, huh?

How many Islamic terrorists has Australia let it? Remember they had an Islamic terrorist attack there in 1915. Islam attacked the USA in 1805.

Chicago has strict gun control--how well has it worked out there? Should Democrats be allowed to have weapons since all of the mass shooters have been Democrats?

Percentage wise there are more Muslims in Australia than in the USA.

Islam in Australia is a minority religious affiliation. According to the 2011 census, 476,291 people, or 2.2% of the total Australian population, wereMuslims.[1] This made Islam the fourth largest religious grouping, after all forms of Christianity (61.1%), irreligion (22.9%), and Buddhism (2.5%).

Islam is the third largest faith in the United States after Christianity and Judaism.[1] According to a 2010 study, it is followed by 0.9% of the population, compared to 70.6% who follow Christianity, 22.8% unaffiliated, 1.9% Judaism, 0.7% Buddhism, and 0.7% Hinduism.[1][2] According to a new estimate in 2016, there are 3.3 million Muslims living in the United States, about 1% of the total U.S. population.[3]

Now you know full well that percentages are meaningless when dealing with questions concerning a mass society such as the USA. Here in Indianapolis, we have a Nation of Islam cult member Congressman (Andre Carson) and the headquarters of the Islamic Society of North America, a Moslem Brotherhood front organization. Downtown Indianapolis is now a very high-crime area and Indianapolis has decayed into one big slum like Chicago, Detroit, or Philadelphia. Downtown Indianapolis also is a major US gay center. Will the last one out of the big American cities please turn out the lights?

The US has 14 times the population of Australia, so we need 14 times the mass shootings just to stay even with Australia.

Australia also hasn't made itself a target by Muslims terrorists, assuming Omar Mateen attack on the Pulse nightclub was terrorism, rather than just a gay vs. gay spat.

As they have zero mass shootings we are way, way over 14 times their number. Also, most of our mass shooting have come from good Americans, not Muslims.

Oh, are you talking about workplace violence? What about people flying planes into buildings? Can we agree that most of our beheadings come from Muslims? How can you be a good American if you perpetrate a mass shooting? I think that your values are confused or else you are attempting some sort of information dominance.

I don't know how statistically significant it is to go 20 years without a mass shooting when it should be expected that the USA has 14 times the mass shootings based on population size, along with other factors that contribute to higher American mass shootings -- other than guns.

Actually, Australia has had a number of mass shootings and mass killings in the last 20 years, just not with victims of several or more unrelated people.

Maybe Austalia's strict gun laws have helped reduce mass killings, but I wonder how many victims of general crimes the strict gun laws have made by preventing citizens from having guns for self-defense.

I see Righteous is trolling around to disagree with anything I post. Well, I take that as a big compliment considering the positions he takes on issues concerning people. I believe there is a rule against tolling on the BB.

Smyth, violence with handguns and suicides with handguns went down significantly after Australia passed their tough gun law.

About a year and a half ago, a woman killed 8 people with a knife in Australia. Gun-related deaths might be down but that doesn't murders are down. But, yes, murders are down in Australia. They're also down with a similar trend in America, in spite of groups like Black Lives Matter promoting racism and murder (something Australia doesn't have to deal with).

The OP and the topic of the OP overlooks many important factors and is presented as if it is proof that gun laws actually protect people. Typical liberal 'logic'.

And probably the Chicago police are corrupt beyond words. Who knows how many gangsters decided that the only way to carry legally was to become a cop?

How did they do it? By not caring how much danger the gun ban put the people in.

    Aggrevated assault rose 49.2 percent.

    Robbery rose 6.2 percent.

    Sexual assault/Rape increased 29.9 percent.

Overall, Australia's violent crime rate rose 42.2 percent.

No thanks. I have no desire to turn the entire country into a shooting gallery like Washington DC or Chicago.

Let's take an honest look at gun crimes in the US.

There are 30,000 gun related deaths per year by firearms. That is not disputed.
What is never shown, though, is a breakdown of those deaths to put them in perspective; as compared to other causes of death.
    • 65% of those deaths are by suicide which would never be prevented by gun laws
    • 15% are by law enforcement in the line of duty and justified
    • 17% are through criminal activity, gang and drug related or mentally ill persons
    • 3% are accidental discharge deaths

So technically, "gun violence" is not 30,000 annually but drops to 5,100.
Still too many? Well, first, how are those deaths spanned across the nation?
    • 480 homicides (9.4%) were in Chicago
    • 344 homicides (6.7%) were in Baltimore
    • 333 homicides (6.5%) were in Detroit
    • 119 homicides (2.3%) were in Washington DC (a 54% increase over prior years)

So basically, 25% of all gun crime happens in just 4 cities. All 4 of those cities have strict gun laws so it is not the lack of law that is the root cause.

This basically leaves 3,825 for the entire rest of the nation or about 75 per state.

That is an average because some States have much higher rates than others.
For example, California had 1,169. Alabama had 1.

Now, who has the strictest gun laws by far? California of course but understand, it is not the tool (guns) driving this. It is a crime rate spawned by the number of criminal persons residing in those cities and states. So if all cities and states are not created equal, then there must be something other than the tool causing the gun deaths.

Are 5,100 deaths per year horrific? Of course.

But let's see a comparison to other deaths.

All death is sad and especially so when it is in the commission of a crime but that is the nature of crime. Robbery, death, rape, assault; all are done by criminals to victims and thinking that criminals will obey laws is ludicrous. That's why they are criminals.

    But what of other deaths?
    • 40,000+ die from a drug overdose – THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR THAT!
    · 36,000 people die per year from the flu, far exceeding the criminal gun deaths
    • 34,000 people die per year in traffic fatalities (exceeding gun deaths even if you include suicide)

    Now it gets good:
    • 200,000+ people die each year (and growing) from preventable medical malpractice.
    • You are safer in Chicago than you are in a hospital!
    • 710,000 people die per year from heart disease. Time to stop the cheeseburgers!

So what is the point? If Obama and the anti-gun movement focused their attention on heart disease, even a 10% decrease would save twice the lives annually of all gun related deaths (including suicide, law enforcement, etc.).

A 10% reduction in malpractice would be 66% of the total gun deaths or 4 times the number of criminal homicides. Simple, easily preventable 10% reductions!

So you have to ask yourself, in the grand scheme of things, why the focus on guns?

    It's pretty simple.

Taking away guns gives control to governments.

This is not conspiracy theory; this is a historical fact.

Why is it impossible for the government to spill over into dictatorship?

The founders of this nation knew that regardless of the form of government, those in power may become corrupt and seek to rule as the British did.

They too tried to disarm the populace of the colonies because it is not difficult to understand; a disarmed populace is a controlled populace.

Thus, the second amendment was proudly and boldly included in the constitution.

It must be preserved at all costs.

The cruel facts are that with the massive influx of Islamists seeking to bring sharia law to the USA, places such as g@y bars are sitting ducks for jihadists who want sharia law. These bars probably will have to be shut down for the safety of their patrons, as jihadists believe that anyone who slanders the name of Allah should not prosper, or even live. The alliance between the left and Islam suffers at this point but it is the left that will have to make the adjustment as time goes by.

I, for one, would like to see CTB respond to Tom Cassidy's post.

You see, it's not "stricter gun laws" that these people are after; what they really think/believe is that no citizen of a developed nation needs a gun. Therefore, what they're after is the abolishment of guns. No guns, no gun deaths. So what they truly mean by "stricter gun laws" is "crime to be in possession of a gun."
