Members of the controversial "black power" group the New Black Panther Party plan to pack legal heat when they hold rallies in Cleveland in conjunction with next week's Republican convention if the law allows, the group's chairman said.

Leaders of the organization, which the Southern Poverty Law Center designates as a hate group, told Reuters that if Ohio's open-carry gun laws allow, its members will bring guns for self-defense. Cleveland police are preparing for mass demonstrations, and word that the New Black Panthers may be armed could complicate preparations.

"If it is an open state to carry, we will exercise our Second Amendment rights because there are other groups threatening to be there that are threatening to do harm to us," Hashim Nzinga, chairman of the New Black Panther Party, told Reuters.

I'd like to see more about the "other groups threatening to be there that are threatening to do harm" to them.

Armed black panthers were "patrolling" at voting places. They were arrested and charged before Obama came to office. The Obama administration immediately dropped charges.

The Obama administration shares the guilt in emboldening that racial supremacist organization. Obama, racist 'n' chief.

If by black panthers, you mean two people or less, then true.
If by voting places you mean more than one place, then false.
If by armed you mean one person had a billy club, then true.
If by arrested you mean put in handcuffs and brought into the police station, then false.
If by charged you mean cited with a crime, then false.

As my mother used to say, "What is good for the goose is good for the gander."

If others can carry legally weapons openly, then there is no legal reason why the Black Panthers cannot do the same. I do not believe anyone should be allowed to carry weapons openly or concealed to a national political convention. I know, I know, that an a quarter will buy me a penny piece of bubblegum.

When was the last time you heard of the KKK carrying guns in a protest?
    Racist+gun=hate crime.

I do not understand the thrust of your question. My point is that, under law, if it is legal for one group to carry arms then it is legal for another group to carry arms. If one hate group can legally carry arms than other hate groups can carry arms. Do you agree?

King Samir Shabazz and Jerry Jackson, were charged with voter intimidation in the incident at a Philadelphia polling place. Charges were later reduced, and then eventually dropped by the Dept of Justice.

I personally do not believe that Obama's DOJ would have dropped charges against white supremacists with nightsticks who were intimidating voters at a polling place. Even if it was only two of them.

Footnote: Shabazz was later arrested for unlicensed carry of a firearm and wearing body armor. LINK

Incorrect. The Bush administration filed a civil complaint against the New Black Panthers but later dropped it. The Obama administration sought an injunction against King Shabazz prohibiting him from being within 100 feet of a polling place while displaying a weapon and got it.

With cops being murdered nationwide, I'd be very careful about open carrying anywhere near a demonstration that might, and more than likely will, turn violent. Just common sense.

"The second report, entitled “Weekly Report for the Week ending May 15, 2009,” and sent on May 18, 2009, demonstrates that the DOJ did an abrupt reversal on the NBPP issue: “On May 15, 2009, the Department voluntarily dismissed its claims” against the NBPP and two of the defendants, the report noted. The DOJ moved for default judgment against only one defendant."

Note that this was after Obama had taken office.

    Well that is illegal anyway.

While I would agree with the basic logic - the Black Panthers are the only "hate group" I know of that are planning on openly carrying. I don't count the KKK, because that was offered as a counter-point without the KKK having actually open-carried.

So your first response was agreeable; your second response allowed Smyth to take you into details that muddy the situation, such as actually identifying the other hate groups (besides the Black Panthers) that are openly carrying at such, or other, events. Please feel free to enlighten me.

The Southern Poverty Law Center ought to define themselves as a "hate group", old commie Morris Dees outfit. Regardless, even a group like the New Black Panthers have both a right to assembly and a right to open carry in the state of Ohio IF they don't have criminal records. So, they ought to go ahead and do it, it's nice to see the far-left (even if they are paranoid to a fault like the NBP) exercise and support the 2A.

Problems at the polls surfaced early Tuesday in the battleground state of Pennsylvania, with Republican election monitors being turned away from polling places and members of the New Black Panther Party appearing at voting sites in Philadelphia.

Pennsylvania Republican officials said 75 election monitors from the party were turned away from polling places in heavily Democratic sections of Philadelphia Tuesday, but a judge has ordered them reinstated.

“It certainly raises the question, what are Democrats doing in the polls that they are working so hard to shield folks from monitoring in this election?” state Republican chairman Rob Gleason said in a statement.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has turned his attention to Pennsylvania in the final days of the race, as polls there have tightened in a state that President Obama’s campaign believed it would win fairly easily. Mr. Romney turned out about 30,000 supporters Sunday night at a rally in the Philadelphia suburbs.

The New Black Panther Party was back at the polls Tuesday in Philadelphia, where its members provoked a complaint of voter intimidation in 2008.

Andy McCarthy has an important story over at National Review Online that does an outstanding job of demolishing many of the myths being propagated about the New Black Panther voter intimidation case. It is important, however, to highlight some specific testimony on one of those myths. One of the constant refrains heard from liberals in their attempt to diminish the importance of the New Black Panther scandal is that there is no evidence that any voters were intimidated or prevented from voting. That claim is patently false although it was repeated last night again by Abigail Thernstrom on NBC News.

For anyone who bothers to actually look at the record, the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights received direct evidence on that very issue. Those critics also miss the point that it is a crime to attempt to intimidate voters and anyone assisting voters, which would include poll watchers, and no one watching the videotape could come to any conclusion other than the New Black Panthers were trying to intimidate people at that poll in Philadelphia.

A whole lot of the radical right wants to be able to carry their guns. Considering the number of folks who ain't so thrilled about Trump, it just seems like a very bad idea.

I said a decade ago, if you want to see the radical right pushing for a change in gun laws, get black people to start buying a lot of guns and carrying.:Sneaky
