Is the media pushing Johnson to split the vote?

For two weeks I have seen a constant stream of articles about Johnson. I don't recall EVER seeing so much info about a third party during an election year. Have to wonder if media is pushing him in the hope of taking votes away from Trump to elect their darling.

Perhaps to create interest? Polls seem to indicate that when Johnson and Stein are included, the gap between Trump and Clinton actually narrows.

I think it's to create more of a horserace dynamic. Massive leads by Clinton are boring. Trump closing the gap creates interest. Whether it is real or not is irrelevant.

So you weren't around in 1980 and 1992, and 1996?

When Johnson is included in the polls he takes more votes away from Hillary than he does from Trump. So your theory about motivation is incorrect.

Well, Gary Johnson is a proponent for legalizing all drugs and open borders and he's an interesting character as well but Light is right - Gary is drawing support mostly from Hillary but I don't think he will get much more of the popular vote than when he ran in 2012, something nobody really talks about. That time, he got around 1,275,000 votes and Jill Stein (who just got arrested on purpose) was in the mix again.

Picking Weld for his VP was questionable for a libertarian. Frankly, I don't care for Gary Johnson, he is a hothead. The libertarian he beat wouldn't endorse him (echos of Ted Cruz) but tried to give Gary a replica of a pistol used by George Washington. Gary just threw it in the trash can. Somebody saw him do that and fished it out and gave it back to Peterson.

He could always back to being the CEO of a pothead company after the election, deep but narrow political appeal.

    Probably.
Nice to see third parties actually getting any coverage at all, anyway. Never gonna break out of this two party system without representation.
