I googled and found the radio podcast that I had listened to from TWOTM radio podcast that often spends time exposing false teachers and the podcast on Tony. Give it a listen and lets discuss it.

Its just plain dangerous to quote from people like Tony even if on occasion he has something good to say. I say avoid him at all costs and his rat poison gospel message.

Don't you think it all depends on the purpose of quoting someone who may have different belief than you?

Paul quoted three different pagans in scripture. I'll just cite one example here.

He quoted from a hymn/song/poem of praise to Zeus written by Aratus in Acts 17.

".....for in Him [God] we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also His offspring.’ Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by art and man’s devising."

He didn't quote Aratus because he [Paul] wanted to agree that praise of Zeus was something good, but he quoted that line to help those people understand the Biblical point that we as Christians are God's children.

This is scripture and that was Paul. We are not Paul and do not write scripture.

That was actually a sermon by Paul addressed to pagans who would know the reference. It was recorded by Luke.

We are preachers like Paul, even if no one records it. Paul instructed people to follow his example as he followed Christ. Therefore, I will use his example as recorded in Acts 17 - that's scriptural.

So, you are saying we should not emulate Paul in this instance. We should not quote pagans.

Hmmm... That is one of the few examples of Paul open air preaching. I guess since we are not Paul we should not follow his example here.

Lets get back on topic. Listen to TWOTM Radio Podcast and come back and post about the false teacher in question.

I don't have to listen to the podcast. I and everyone else I know already knows and have known for years that he does not present God's truth.

As far as being on topic, you are the one in your original post who brought up quoting people. Everyone who has posted thus far has been on topic.

This thread, and the exchange in another that spawned it, is among the silliest I've seen (and believe me, I've seen plenty of silly threads here).

So I can't quote Jefferson (because he was a Deist) or John Adams (because he was a Unitarian) on the Declaration of Independence? I can't quote John Wesley about anything because he was Arminian? I can't quote Voltaire on anything, or John Hume, or Augustine, or, or, or ...

My signature is from Oliver Cromwell, and man of some strengths and many weaknesses who happened to put well a sentiment I agree with.

Silliness, silliness. I do not find it difficult to understand that you seem to have problems with everyone you come in contact with, either on the board or off.

There is a huge difference between positively quoting a person claiming to be Christian in doctrine who has shown many erroneous doctrines and quoting pagan sayings. One doesn't necessarily justify the other IMO, so that said I believe the comparisons are being misapplied in a sense.

Another thought, at least one commentator has mentioned that Paul's usage of pagan writ in Acts 17 was abandoned later as per 1 Corinthians 2:1-2. Interesting thought and take on the issue.

As fr as application I would not employ the words of Campolo if he says things that seem orthodox simply because some may get the idea he is being endorsed or they may then feel he is a solid teacher.

That's the whole point - the quote and the OP of the thread in question were only secular conversations.

A thread was started asking why many members seemingly have not been here in a while - a very benign and secular conversation. It had nothing to do with doctrine or scripture or anything of that nature.

Atheists could have that same conversation about their own message boards. Where'd everybody go? So could plumbers, crochet fanatics, and Presbyterians.

So after the secular question was asked - a secular answer was given.

"I have decided not to let my time be used up by people to whom I make no difference while I neglect those for whom I am irreplaceable."

    Secular question - secular answer.

    And thus ensued the indignation.

    Here's funny....
WOTM calling out anybody as false.

Kinda like Roman Catholics calling out Mormons. Or Church of Christ calling out Jehovah's Witnesses

Spot on RSR. Tony is off target much of the time, but so are we all. Why not build Christ's servant's up, where we can, rather than post thread after thread to demean them?

Well, I'm not one for an attack thread but Tony is not exactly "Christ's servant" as if he is teaching orthodox Christianity. He has left orthodox Christianity behind for his own form of liberal theology.

Yes, attack threads and attack posts are becoming too much of the norm. But I agree, I am no fan of liberalism especially when it comes to the Word of God.

    So...
what is your final position concerning this thread?

Attack or not to attack, that is the question

Not to put too fine a point on it, but this thread is an attack thread on Tony. It contains no or very little edification. Now if a few choice quotes from Tony had been listed, together with biblically based refutation, then it would have been appropriate.
