Even after Trump loses, the GOP is still toast

    Last year, I wrote an article calling Donald Trump a godsend for moderate Republicans. Trump, I predicted, would lose so spectacularly that the GOP would be forced to transform itself, surrendering its mindless obstructionism, science denial, xenophobia and plutocracy. After a purge like that, the party would finally be able to compete in future national elections.

    I was wrong. I now see that Trump’s candidacy has exacerbated the Republican Party’s weaknesses, alienating minorities, fracturing the base and stunting smart policy development. The party’s structural problems are so severe that reform is impossible. Even if Trump loses and the GOP races to forget him, the party is doomed. And very few of our leaders seem to care.

    You are probably correct, however, wait. We need to see how badly he is beaten.

    My prediction is that if the GOP is toast so is the Democratic part because they have a shared symbiosis.

    Only the Lord knows what will emerge from this fiasco synthesis under the rule of our queen Hillary - possibly a Marxist socialist form of government depending on the outcome of the houses and the SCOTUS appointments.

    I agree with you there Hank, I'll be glad just to see Obama finally go - talk about a cult of personality and unqualified, after almost eight years, he still is.

    I really can't stand any of these people now, either - Trump, who I'll vote for, is more of a populist than a conservative, he is an Arnold/Jesse clone. Johnson is a pothead, and Jill is a watermelon flake. And Hillary brings all the baggage of corruption and scandal and makes Trump look like small potatoes in comparison.

    Glad it will be all over in a few weeks but neither party will be ruined forever and ever, though you'll hear that anyways. The Democratic Party was finished FOREVER back in 2004, then the GOP was four years later. I do think there is a power struggle, a restructuring going on within the GOP but the Trump nomination is a symptom, not the cause.

    I don't think the Republican Party will survive Trump. One or more parties will need to spring up ASAP to counterbalance the Democratic Party for the good of the country.

    It might be even worse for Republicans if Trump manages to win.

    The Republican Party will reinvent itself after the election and go merrily on its way as it has been doing since 1854.

    It is my wish that, in that process of reinventing itself, it would return to the republicanism of the Founding Fathers rather than the American Conservatism that dominates the GOP today. (American Conservatism is "individual liberty for all," but locked within the bounds of conformity to "American values." No freedom, no liberty, for those who dissent.)

    But I'm not going to hold my breath.

    Who determines what the American values are?

    Do you mean no dissent at all?

    Who determines what dissent is out of bounds.

    It seems to me your stance is out of line with "American values".

    After the loss in 2012 they had an election autopsy to identify what went wrong and how to fix it. Number one on the list was that they needed to appeal to minorities, especially Hispanics.

    Look how that reinvention worked out for them.

    Conservative must leave the GOP. The establishment has made it clear for years that they don't want us there, and after Trump, Conservatives need to give the establishment the party they want, one with out Conservatives holding their feet to the fire. Let them try to win without us.

    Some are ass-u-ming an awful lot by accepting the title of this post as fact. It is merely speculation and a poor attempt at writing sci-fi titles.

    IMO, conservatism and not just the GOP is OVER.

    We will no longer have a republic of the people by the people for the people but
    of the king and queen by the king and queen for the king and queen (Remember two for the price of one?).

    Republic Conservatism will dwindle and disappear from the scene.
    Our brave New World will be bolstered up by our new SCOTUS justices appointed by our soon to be coronated queen and ratified by our new left-handed house.

    New laws legislating abortion, euthanasia and eugenics will be legislated to promote genocide in disguise. The Constitution is a living breathing thing.

    "People" in the womb have no rights.

    Our new religion - Secular Humanism.

    Good job to our comrades out there, eight years to go to transform the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.

    Ya, I know motivation by fear... OK don't look next time you cross the street, cancel your "insurance" policy, leave your door unlocked at night...

    /that is exactaly what conservatives did in NY State. The NY Conservative Party was formed in 1962 - A Conservative has won by himself only a handful of times.
    But in NY we have the Fusion Ballot - often the Republican candidate is crossed endorsed by the Conservative Party - and that additional line often helps him win.
    Now, when the Republican party puts up a liberal - and the Conservative Party puts up it's own candidate - the Democrat Party will normally win.
    I ran for State Assembly on the Conservative Party (only) several years ago - I ran against a Democrat - who had no Republican candidate. I won about 15% of the vote. You see many Republicans would not go down to Row "C" to pull our lever.

    Just giving you the facts.

    Excellent questions -
    and let me include - "the interpretation"

    For example - Americans want to help the underprivileged- say a homeless family of four
    But what does that mean -
    A) A nine room home with 5 bedrooms and 2 1/2 baths - with a two car garge
    B) A four room apt with only 1 bedroom (parents sleep in living room)
    C) Have Jimmy Carter help build a home thur Habit for Humanity)
