Wanna Live A Long Life ?

    The Lord gives many 70 years or so . He mercifully takes some at a much earlier age .

    I have been looking at the advanced ages of Reformed scholars . It is amazing how much longevity they have . Leon Morris passed away in July about 92 years of age . I value his books very much . He will be missed -- but his books will be around much longer . James Packer has been a tremendous blessing in my life . You may know of his classic : "Knowing God " . He is still plugging away at 80 . I am making him an exception by allowing him into the category here . I will list Reformed scholars who were born in the first quarter of the 20th century . They had to have attained the age of at least 80 . By listing them does not mean that I endorse everything they stood for .

    First the living ( I already mentioned Packer ) . They are not in any particular order .

    Edmund P. Clowney 1917 -

    Roger Nicole 1917 -

    Bruce Metzger 1914 -

    John Stott 1921 -

    Now for those in glory .

    Gleason Archer 1916-2004

    Kenneth Kantzer 1917-2002

    John H. Leith 1919-2002

    Gordon H. Clark 1902-1985

    G. C. Berouwer 1904-1996

    John Gerstner 1914-1996

    Carl F.H. Henry 1913-2003

    Philip E. Hughes 1915 --? I could not confirm when he passed away but I think it was in 1995 at the earliest .

    I heard Carl Henry on two occasions in the early 90's . I heard and met Dr. Gerstner . I have a funny story about our meeting that I can share at another time .

    Do any of you have ayone else to add to the list ? I will , out of my generous spirit , allow other names to be submitted from 1926 like Packer.

    If any of you from the other side of the aisle would like to start a similiar listing of old men from your persuasion -- go for it on a new thread . I'll be reading that thread with interest .

    I'm sure the non-C's could make a list of old guys, too.

    Didn't Clowney pass away recently, like in the last few months? I might be mistaken, but I thought I remember reading about that.

    Roger Nicole

    Roger Nicole (b. 1915) is visiting Professor of Theology at Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando and professor emeritus of Gordon-Conwell Seminary. A native Swiss Reformed theologian and a Baptist, Dr. Nicole is regarded as one of the preeminent theologians in America. He was an associate editor for the New Geneva Study Bible and assisted in the translation of the NIV Bible. He is a past president and founding member of the Evangelical Theological Society, and a founding member of the International Council on Biblical Inerrancy. He has written over one hundred articles and contributed to more than fifty books and reference works.
    Nicole received S.T.M. and Th.D. degrees from Gordon Divinity School, a Ph.D. from Harvard University, and D.D. from Wheaton College.

    Yes, a real blessing at 91 yrs and still quite active!

    I may not be a great scholar but God has certainly been good and blest me with more that the fourscore and ten! I thank Him! At 75 I continue an avid reader of reformed theology and God's word and to hunger and thirst after righteousness!

    He wills that I should holy be,
    Who can resist His will?
    The counsel of His grace in me
    He surely shall fulfill.

    :laugh: You can't be serious! To live a long life you have to be a calvinist? :laugh:

    I'll listen to Scripture when it comes to living a long life...

    Deu 5:16 Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and so that you may prosper in the land the LORD your God is giving you.

    Webdog, Rippon clearly stated:
    The interest of this thread was to be of reformed scholars. No one doubts there are christian scholars of other persuasions that lived long lives. Tell us of them in your new thread!

    The title of the thread is "Wanna Live a Long Life?". I want to live a long life. The OP insinuates that being a calvinist = living a long life. That's foolishness. Does it really matter what preacher lived a long life? I take the OP to mean that if there are more calvinist preachers living longer than non calvinists...they must be doing something right that rewards a long life.

    Gimme a break :laugh: As a bit of a C-A General Fencesittertarianist I've seen both sides come up with some lines here now and then, but this one takes the cake :)

    Not the best way to try prove a point in this debate is it when the other side could just say "God is just giving them time to repent....." :smilewinkgrin:

    Oh, and did Paul say staying or going was better in Philippians 1:23? ;)

    Seems to me that no matter how much good faith a poster begins with there are some who must agitate, object and argue on ad infinitum!

    If this thread is of no interest why post at all?
    If you do post, can you not find it in your heart to be kind? Where is your fruit of the spirit, your love, joy and peace?

    The fact that some reformed theologians lived long lives in interesting! Who were/are they?
    It is inspiring to learn of their lives, at least to those who are reformed.

    If you so object, please begin a thread conforming to your own persuasion of theology and we, if we should post there, will do so with kindness!!

    Dr David Martyn Lloyd-Jones (December 20, 1899 – March 1, 1981) was a protestant Christian who headed much of the evangelical movement of the 20th century. He stood firm against what he saw as false liberal doctrines that had become a part of the Christian denominations of Wales and England. He believed strongly that reformed evangelical Christians ought to leave the old denominations as a protest against the loose, un-biblical doctrines that were getting ever more mainstream

    Probably because of all those cigars he smoked. So the lesson is, you need to be a Calvinist and a Fundamentalist to live a long life. :tongue3: :laugh:

    It didn't seem to do much for John Calvin, who only made it to 55. Bunyan was 59. Jonathan Edwards was 54 (felled by a smallpox innoculation.)

    The title is going a different direction than the OP . . .

    So, which is it? Living a long life, or eulogizing a bunch of old guys?

    Actually there is nothing the reformed would rather do than read the theology of a bunch of dead guys:

    He died at 95 years of age December 11,2010. I will miss though I've never met him. He was such a blessing to the Church --and will continue to be through his works.

    Is this thread for real? I guess all non-reformed die early. What about all those popes that lived to be a ripe old age? :eek:
