Visits at the tomb “on the First Day” by women

    1) “Mary sees the stone removed”, “while being early darkness still”, dusk. Then Peter and John go to the tomb to see what Mary has told them. (Jn20:1-10)

    2) “Earliest morning- darkness”, just after midnight, “the two women” (variant – the two Marys), “and certain others with them”, for the first time, “came to the sepulchre, bringing the spices they had prepared”. (Lk24:1) “They returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.” (“Then Peter stood up and ran to the tomb; and bending low over, he saw the linen clothes. He went back, wandering by himself about that what had happened.” (Lk24:9-12) Cf. John's account in 20:1-10. Luke talks of another visit by Peter, because for one thing, he doesn't mention John.)

    3) These women to make sure, a second time came to the tomb “very early before sunrise”. (Mk16:2)

    4) Mary from after the others had fled in fear (Mk16:8) “had had stood after without at the grave” (Jn20:11). At the time a gardener should begin work, about sunrise, Jesus “early … first appeared to Mary”. (Mk16:9)

    5) Soon after – after they a third time have visited the tomb and “the angel explained” to them what had happened during the Resurrection – Jesus appears to the other women “as they went to tell his disciples”. (Mt28:5, 9)

Mary went to the tomb, three times, Jn20:1, Lk24:1, Mk16:2, and Mk16:9 when she “had remained standing behind” until, Jn20:11, Jesus appeared to her, “first”, Mk16:9, and alone, “at the grave”, Jn20:16.

The other women also went to the tomb, three times, Lk24:1, Mk16:2, and Mt28:5 when “the angel explained” to them what had happened during the Resurrection, and Jesus, as “they went to tell his disciples”, appeared to them. (Mt28:5, 9)

    You just can't see it

    Matthew 28:9-10 (KJV)
And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him. 10 Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.

Of the women's three visits to the tomb, which one was this?
    (a) First
    (b) Second
    (c) Third

No need for silly glib, just pick one answer and we will take it up from there. Method, get methodical for once in your life

    What are you doing then?

It is for your sake that I point out His words to you that a meeker approach is warranted since you are on the side of truth in this discussion.

He is just reading it wrong. Is not his signature indicating he is a Bible student?

If you were "marking" him as a false teacher that every one is to avoid, then that would be Biblically why you would lable all those adjectives towards his direction for the sake of the readers. That's basically saying to every one that you are washing your hands of him as in dusting off your feet, but you are not doing that.

You are still trying to correct him and to teach him, which I hope you are still hoping that the Lord will get through to him.

So far he is still discussing the topic with you. I would call that a miracle. Most people would just write the "corrector" off when they are being insulting and an antagonist. I did that to one poster in this forum recently, and I had told him as such before I had withdrawn from posting to him any further. I do not care to see anything from him any more because I do not see Christ's love in him when he posts like that.

But he is still engaging with you, and so God must be giving grace here that He is still using you to minister to him. I just think you can save time if you just keep addressing the topic if you are hoping for him to receive the corrections and edification from Him.

May God continue to bless you to share the truth in meekness and in patience to teach in Christ's love. I shall say no more on this topic.

I see what you are trying to do is to make sense of John 20th chapter in relation to the other scriptural references, but do try to consider that Mark 16th chapter is just referring to the one visit for now, and then try fitting John 20th chapter into Mark 16th reference without dividing the one visit that Mark was talking about which was in relation to what the angel told Mary to tell the disciples about meeting Him along the road later.

You are correct in that there had been more than one visit to the sepulchre due to John 20th chapter, but Mark's reference was about that particular visit wherein the angel told the women to tell the disciples that Jesus will meet them later on. Mark was not referring to any other visit even though elsewhere in the other gospels, there were other visits, but Mark was reporting about this specific visit and that message because it led to the event along the road with Jesus that Mark wanted to share.

I have to admit that it would be a challenge to line up all those accounts of that resurrection day to make sense of it, but with His help, we may be able to come to an agreement with what had happened that day.

Okay. I think I see what Gerhard is seeing in Mark.

Mark 16:5 And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted. 6 And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him. 7 But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you. 8 And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre; for they trembled and were amazed: neither said they any thing to any man; for they were afraid.

This below is a departure from the visit mentioned above. What is below is actually a reference to an earlier visit.

Mark 16:9 Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils. 10 And she went and told them that had been with him, as they mourned and wept. 11 And they, when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not.

This portion of Mark 16:9-11 is this event described in detail in John 20:1-18 ending with verse 18 "Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things unto her;" but left out the part that they believed her not which what had happened in Mark 16:11 above.

Then this happened in Mark regarding what the angel told the women to tell the disciples of Jesus meeting them along the road.

Mark 16:12 After that he appeared in another form unto two of them, as they walked, and went into the country. 13 And they went and told it unto the residue: neither believed they them.

Going back to the visit Mark was originally talking about, but in Matthew.

Matthew 28:5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. 6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. 7 And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you. 8 And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word.

Then we see a meeting with Jesus along the way in telling His disciples which was NOT mentioned in Mark.

Matthew 28:9 And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him. 10 Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.

This was not the earlier meeting with Jesus by Mary Magdalene in John 20 where she was instructed by Jesus not to touch Him, because it was along the way in telling His disciples that they held His feet.

It gets clearer that there were more than just two women at the tomb that was told to tell the disciples what the angel told them to say.

Luke 24:9 And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest. 10 It was Mary Magdalene and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles. 11 And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not. 12 Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.

Here we get more info than what has been provided from above that Peter was not the only one that had run to the sepulchre as we read below.

John 20:2 Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him. 3 Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre. 4 So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre. 5 And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in. 6 Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie,

This is an example of why I do not see two visits of Peter to the tomb in those two references but one visit. Just because Matthew did not mention the other disciple, John, it does not mean John was not there or that there were two visits since there is no reason for two visits after the women told Peter the news, but that was the event more in detail in John for when they had believed not still in .

John 20:8 Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed. 9 For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went away again unto their own home.

Mark 16:10 And she went and told them that had been with him, as they mourned and wept. 11 And they, when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not.

So after the women told the disciples what the angel wanted them to; this happened as the angel said but the two witnesses from the road were not believed either.

Mark 16:12 After that he appeared in another form unto two of them, as they walked, and went into the country. 13 And they went and told it unto the residue: neither believed they them.

Then we have the report of His appearing where Thomas was not present.

Mark 16:14 Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen.

That event above is more in detail below.

John 20:18 Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things unto her. 19 Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. 20 And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord. 21 Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: 23 Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained. 24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.

So I admit my error so that Gerhard was correct "somewhat" that Mark 16:9 was another visit, but it was actually an earlier visit which was mentioned in detail at the beginning of John 20th chapter.

I do not know how to align the four gospel narratives that well enough to give a decent presentation, but obviously, not all the details are given for the resurrection day event in all the four gospel account. Some gospel narrative can leave out an event or two or just touching it barely in general reference.

I believe where one may misread the four as meaning multiple visits, if one uses His wisdom, we may see how some verses are talking about the one visit, but giving more detail in another gospel narrative whereas some verses are referring to another visit.

Anyway. that is where I am at so far in this discussion.

The most sensible harmonization of the resurrection accounts I find in John Wenham's Easter Enigma.

There has been various attempts to harmonize which is probably a noble thing to do.

Some of the attempts are less than honest and are designed to prop sectarian arguments such as a Saturday resurrection Sabbatarian theory.

Gerhard's attempt is utterly ridiculous; he reckons the Women and Mary made three visits inside the 6 hours from midnight to 0500-0600H Sunday morning, and on each of these they encountered an angel or angels who informed them of Jesus' resurrection.

He also arbitrarily mashes bits of each of the gospel accounts to conjure the multiple visits like the women's three trips. In other words, each of the resurrection account , to Gerhard, is a mishmash of multiple visits made to appear as a single visit.

Is there ANY account of the women's trip to the tomb that is not graced with angel(s)? Nope yet Gerhard reckons that of the three trips by the women, at least one had no angels in it.

Why is it ridiculous? How would Mary who not only has seen the risen Christ but had touched and cleaved to him visit the sepulcher with other women in Matthew 28 to seek him(v5)?

Found this online for everybody to look at.

    http://graceelgin.org/documents/EasterEnigma2.pdf

Thanks for mentioning it. I think we all have to discern everything even with that source since the Virgin Mary is mentioned here which this cannot be, since she was a wife to Joseph and had sons and daughters by him after Jesus was born.

And yes, we all need to discern what I share too. If I minister with the intention of giving the truth in serving Him, then I have to leave room for growth by Him in case I am wrong about something, especially when He shows me where I am wrong at. It's called bearing more fruit.

John 15:1I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. 2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. 3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.

I trust Him to keep the foot of pride away from me, because that is the one thing that can keep me from serving Him in Christ's love towards others.

Well, when a believer gets it in their heads that they have to keep the sabbath day under the weight of the Old Covenant, they may have a hard time seeing how believers nowadays are blameless for not keeping the sabbath day as Jesus had tried to explain this in Matthew 12:1-8.

I am trying to discern if he is being taught this way by other teachers or if he is actually viewing it that way because he wants to view it that way.

While harmonization may appear daunting we can easily see through a faulty harmony by testing its conclusions.

In Matthew, Mark and Luke accounts of women's visit to the tomb, all include both angel(s) and resurrection message by them. But Gerhard had insisted that angels never appeared to the women in at least one of the three times he claims they visited the tomb. The reason for this is because he can see the ludicrousness of multiple visits to anoint the body despite repeated assurances of Christ's resurrection by the Angels. Either the scriptures or Gerhard is wrong. Both can't be right

So we challenge him to show us an account of a single 'angel-less' visit by the women to the tomb. If he can't, then he should retract his disharmony

First of all, there is no agreement to come to regarding the fact none of "~all those accounts~" was an account "~of that resurrection day~". The First Day of the week was not the Resurrection Day.

Wenham achieved NO 'harmony of the Gospels' because he attempted to fit in "~all those accounts~" of visits to the tomb like sardines into the same tin the Resurrection is supposed to have fitted in.

Wenham is the most brilliant harmony I have ever read. Yours is dirty tripe. A mishmash of incoherent glib

Show us a single visit to the tomb by women that was not attended to by an angel or Angels

Perhaps prayer is needed here. He does seem to be among false teachings from which may be clouding his reading. Pride can also be a factor. I make mistakes too, but I hope in Jesus that He will help me yield to the correction since I desire to represent Him as He is the Truth.

Ephesians 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. 11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth....

We can never stop learning while we are down here in this flesh. It is only when we come face to face with Him, that all shall be known.

1 Corinthians 13:9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. 10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. 11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. 12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

Agreed. But besides prayer, one can interrogate the logical conclusion of their theological castles and dismiss them right away. That's how I kicked out Calvinism because it makes God the author of sin.

Remember Gerhard's is not an innocent study of scriptures but a complex theological construct with multiple assumptions and presumptions leading to impossible conclusions.

Three trips by women to bury Jesus properly within a span of 6 hours, and on each trip an angel appears to them and tells them of the resurrection. Do you need special spiritual discernment to see through this nonsense?

Little wonder his theories have zero traction nowhere in Christian theological circles. They don't pass the simplest test of logic let alone faithfulness to the Written Word. John Wenham, he simplified such a complex task and made lots of sense.

    I asked you a question...a very simple question. You said;

Could you please show us from the scriptures using any version of your choice a single trip the women made to the tomb where they never encountered angel(s) or where they encountered angel(s) but they never informed them that Jesus was resurrected?

Please show us a single trip to the tomb by the women for reasons other than ANOINTING Jesus' body, and explain the purpose of that non-anointing trip

Start with the CORRECT TIMES as they are supplied in the Gospels, and get the true chronology of EVENTS

VISITS AT the tomb “on the First Day”

    1) “Mary sees the stone removed”, “while being early darkness still”, dusk. Then Peter and John go to the tomb to see what Mary has told them. (John 20:1-10)

    2) “Earliest morning- darkness”, just after midnight, “the two women” (variant – the two Marys), “and certain others with them”, for the first time, “came to the sepulchre, bringing the spices they had prepared”. (Luke 24:1) “They returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.” (“Then Peter stood up and ran to the tomb; and bending low over, he saw the linen clothes. He went back, wandering by himself about that what had happened.” (Luke 24:9-12) Cf. John's account in 20:1-10. I can't say Luke talks of another visit by Peter, but it seems true because Luke doesn't mention John.)

    3) These women to make sure, a second time came to the tomb “very early before sunrise”. (Mark 16:2)

    4) Mary from after the others had fled in fear (Mk16:8) “had had stood without at the grave” (John 20:11). At the time a gardener should begin work, about sunrise, Jesus “early … first appeared to Mary”. (Mark 16:9)

    5) Soon after – after they a third time have visited the tomb and “the angel explained” to them what had happened during the Resurrection – Jesus appears to the other women “as they went to tell his disciples”. (Matthew 28:5, 9)

Mary went to the tomb, three times, John 20:1, Lk24:1, Mark 16:2, and Mk16:9 when she “had remained standing behind” until, John 20:11, Jesus appeared to her, “first”, Mark 16:9, and alone, “at the grave”, John 20:16.
The other women also went to the tomb, three times, Luke 24:1, Mark 16:2, and Matthew 28:5 when “the angel explained” to them what had happened during the Resurrection, and Jesus, as “they went to tell his disciples”, appeared to them. (Matthew 28:5, 9)

The answer to the ‘Easter enigma’ (John Wenham) is simple: Each Gospel contributed to the whole with one of several sources; each added a personal part that, put together, will bring the whole story of the Resurrection into proper perspective.

Tradition – that is, the Sunday-resurrection approach – makes of these several stories of several visits, the one and simultaneous occasion of Jesus’ resurrection. Contradictions, discrepancies and total confusion are the inevitable result! It was bad enough that this ‘solution’ to a self-created ‘riddle’ was ever offered just to protect Sunday’s presumed status of being the day of the Resurrection. It became a comedy of tragic proportions when Sunday-protagonists began to defend their presumptuousness through unlawful improvements on the Scriptures.
