Washington gunman motivated by fake news 'Pizzagate' conspiracy

    US police have arrested a man wielding an assault rifle who entered a pizza restaurant that was the target of fake news reports it was operating a child abuse ring led by Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and her top campaign aide.

    An unidentified 35-year-old man was being held for questioning after police were called to the Comet Ping Pong restaurant in Washington near the Maryland border, said Aquita Brown, a spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Police Department in the nation’s capital.

    The suspect entered the restaurant and pointed a gun at a restaurant employee, who fled and notified authorities, police said. The man then discharged the weapon inside the restaurant. There were no injuries.

    Two weapons were found inside the restaurant and a third one was recovered from the man’s vehicle, police added.

    They said the suspect during an interview with investigators revealed that he came to the establishment to “self-investigate” Pizzagate, the police statement said. Pizzagate is a baseless conspiracy, which falsely claims Clinton and her campaign chief John Podesta were running a child sex ring from the restaurant’s backrooms.

    Speaking of fake news, I'm pretty sure that the report that the man was wielding an "assault rifle" is completely false.

    For those who don't know, an assault rifle is a fully automatic weapon, a type of weapon that has been essentially banned in the US since 1934 with the exception of a select few who have special licenses and pay handsomely for the privilege.

    It was probably just a scary looking firearm.

    If you read the article you should have seen the words " anassault weapon" was from the police and was in quotes. It was not a speculation by the writer of the article.

    Rather off the topic reply of the question. Should "fake news" be outlawed?

    Actually it is. An "assault weapon" was defined by the "assault weapon" ban of 1994, that banned scary looking guns without much regard to power/use or threat to public safety. An "assault rifle" (notice the difference between the words "weapon" and "rifle"), is an automatic weapon.

    So this is a news story that is false regarding a basic fact. It makes it sound like there are lots of unhinged people running around with automatic weapons, which is not true.

    What news is really putting out stories on pizzagate, though?

    I thought pizzagate was more of a conspiracy theory than fake news.

    Well, the son of the national security advisor, Michael Flynn Jr., thinks it's a real story. Flynn Jr. was Lt. Gen Michael Flynn's chief of staff.

    So the elder Flynn posted an article that possibly alluded to pizzagate, and when he got attacked the younger Flynn went on the offensive?

    This is getting hard to follow.
