My perception may be inaccurate but it is my perception.

Fundamental baptists are independant and answer only to Jesus. All offerings stay in the church for their maintainance and growth.

SBC has a head quarters where a percentage of the offerings go. They tend to be more liberal as F.B.C.s' tend to be very conservative.

Correct me if I am wrong!

This has been discussed a number of times. You may want to read this one

    http://www.baptistboard.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi/topic/10/4701.html?

The biggest difference between Southern Baptists and Independent Baptists is in how they fund missionaries.

Now by asking what the difference is between Southern Baptists and Fundamental Baptists your terminology may be a problem. There are many Southern Baptists who would consider themselves Fundamental.

Another difference (at least in the churches I know of personally) is that:

IFB churches usually are encouraged to wear 'dresses only', long hair for women, short hair and suits for men, no movies, no smoking, no wine, etc.

SBC is more relaxed in their standards. They may wear pants to church (the ladies) and have short hair, the men wear jeans to church, may have long hair, go to the movies, smoke, drink wine with their meals, etc.

I am not condemning either of these. I am just giving my observations. I have belonged to both churches. IFB and SBC...

I attended a "fundamental" Southern Baptist church. My Pastor stated that the reason for the SBC affiliation is Missions...

*This is to all who read this not just the person I am quoting from*

Just to clarify. It is not the belief of the IFB's for the women to wear dresses, no smoking, drinking, movie going etc. as you have stated.
We (I) do not follow the rules of the IFB church. We (I) do however follow the Bible. That my dear is the difference between IFB's and SBC's.
We follow God's command. SBC's answer to someone else, and they answer to someone else and so on. Sort of like the Catholic church.
SBC's standards on dress, music, drinking, smoking etc.. has gone away from the Bible. Somone who is higher up than the pastor told someone else that it was ok for all these things and like a stab wound it kept bleeding until the "movement" was in place.

IFBers are know as the radicals. AMEN! God was (Is) radical. He has one way and one way only. We follow that.

And if you are to please God you will willingly do as your suppose to.

When I first got saved in a SBC and I went home and looked for a home church my coice was the IFB. 6 years later I know that was the right thing to do. I wore pants, had my hair short, drank etc. No one "TOLD" me not to do that. God's conviction is what changed me. I now do wear skirts all the time, my hair is long, I threw away all the liquor in my house and choose not to attend places with alcohol.
I do it because the Holy Spirit talk to me and convicted me of my sins. Not because the IFB church told me to.

People make us out to be the Hitler of churches so to speak. We are the foundation on which baptist started.

BibleMaMa: (Just to clarify) I did not state it was the 'belief' of the IFB's. I said IFB churches usually encourage this.

    BTW, I am IFB...

</font>[/QUOTE]As am I, people who concentrate on these extra-biblical interpretations tend to at some point cease to be fundamentalists and begin to be legalists.

    I agree 100% Scott!

I was just pointing out some of the differences that I see in MY town.

I am not acquainted with ALL IFB and SBC churches.

I'm afraid that perhaps BibleMaMa has been informed incorrectly about SBC churches - perhaps by way of some well-meaning IFB propaganda (of which I have witnessed several times). I pastor an SBC church myself, and we are far more autonomous than any of the local independent baptist churches. We choose to associate and fellowship with sister churches of like faith and order. No one in the SBC has ever told me what to say, what to preach, what to teach, or what church doctrine to adopt - save that all of it be scripturally sound.

I don't know where you got that idea but nothing could be further from the truth. The Southern Baptist Convention is an association of independent churches who coordinate together for certain projects (missions, schools, etc.). All SBC churches are congregational in their leadership. Each church answers to no one but God.

Now there have been some cases where churches have been excluded from the convention. The latest example I know of here in NC was when a church performed a 'marriage' ceremony for a same sex couple. This church was voted out of the local and state associations, but that was the extent of the conventions power. Of course that church is now independent.

As far as standards of dress, tobacco, alcohol, music, and others it is true that the average SBC church is probably a little more relaxed than the average IFB church. But believe me there are plenty of both types of churches at both extremes. In fact the conservative revival in SBC churches has given rise to an entire new group of Independent Baptist churches to liberal for the SBC.

I don't know where you got THIS misinformation but I, for one, would appreciate it if you'd refrain from condemning all SBC churches because of some bitterness from your past!

I'm IFB and in my church the members do drink the occasional glass of wine and some of us womenfolk even go watch films together from time to time. A group of us including me & my mother saw Meet the Fockers just last monday. Much of what Hollywood makes is so violent that it certainly qualifies as to quote Tatertot "ugly movies", but a bit of sexual innuendo doesn't faze us.

I would not go see that movie simply because of the 'play on words' of the last name. And, YES, that is what it was intended to sound like!

I even turned the TV off when the commercials for it came on! I did not want my grandson to hear that word repeated over and over...

I've seen some pretty interesting comments here so I'll just through in my two cents. A comment was made that IFB churches have tossed out people for not following the "rules". Well while I attend an IBF church that is not our stand or philosphy. Our pastor preaches standards from the Bible but if you are woman and you want to wear pants to church you are still welcome. If you went to the movies last night, went to a party we don't care. That is not to say such is condoned our church just believes in helping as many people as possible(I thought that was the mission of church anyway. It is my humble opinion that once you have or regain a fellowship with God you will want to adhere to his "rules" to show your love to him and validate your faith before others. As far as the difference I know missions is a big one so let me address that our church supports several missionaries and we routinely review their progress if we as a church believe that missionary has become complacent on the feild we may vote to drop him(This is very rare it has only happened a couple times that I'm aware of). We just like to know exactly who we are supporting and what exactly they are doing that is the biggest difference that I can think of.
