I once got into a conversation with someone who said using words like gosh darnit, shoot, or whatever were just as bad as using the real thing, because that is what you were implying. I am asking if you agree or disagree with that. :flower::smilewinkgrin:

Sort of like a woman I used to work with. Her brother in law was coming on to her, and she entertained the thought of it... so she did it, rasoning, "To think it is as bad as doing it."

oops. i picked the third one... i meant to pick the second one...

i dont think it matters what word you use... as long as its not the actual cuss word.

when i say things like "flippin rediculous" - i mean "flippin rediculous" - not "effin rediculous" - that doesnt even come to thought.

or even "frick" - which is a sketchy word anyways. i prefer "flip" or "pick" - haha. my grandma uses the word "pickin" - she sometimes says "that picked me right off" - so i use that...

a guy in my class... his last name is "Fricke"...

It is totally dependent on the attitude of the heart.

Did you ever stop to think taht the same word is decent and usable in another country in certain instances?

So what makes a word wrong?

The Bible says that two things are wrong, the first is that Taking the name of the Lord in vain is wrong.
This can be done in a variety of ways.

Also, we are not to allow any corrupt communication out of our mouths.

So, in order to be corrupt, it must have an evil intention behind it.

I voted yes, because it was the cuss word you meant it was the cuss word in your mind and heart, the only difference is that the substitute word has always been more socially acceptable, people can say them around children. The meaning you meant with the substitue was the meaning of the cuss word. Doeesn't make it ok.

Alright, does this mean if, in any setting, these 'substitute' words are used, there might as well be no rule or stigma attached to saying the word(s) really on the speaker's mind?

I voted "yes" but I suppose it depends.

I know the Pastor of a church who says, "I don't give a flip what everyone else does..." I don't think he is thinking the evil thought or covering up the heavy-duty word... It's just a word he uses.

I used to know someone who had a temper and he'd throw clean words at you when clearly the bad thought was behind it...

    Good Night

Do y'all know how many ways the phrase "Good Night" can be used as an interjection?

I voted "yes" but probably a year ago I would have voted for one of the other 2 options.

I think the substitute word can sound just as bad as the real cuss word when it' s said the same way. We all know what the person is wanting to say or at least thinking of.

I am trying not to use the substitute words at all and I find that it helps my speech in general in all areas. It changes the attitude, too. But this is all due to the HS - nothing from me. And I certainly am not consistent, but I'm trying.

I voted that I think it depends. Even the word "OWW" could be construed as a cuss word if you hit your finger with a hammer.

God tells us that we are not to take His name in vain, but He never said we can't take a false lord's name in vain. I have been know to say "Buddah" or "Zeus" on occasion...

    I voted "depends".

I was on worthychat the other day and someone asked me, "how's the weather there?", I responded by typing, "crappy", but, what appeared on the screen was, "please pray for me, I can't stop cussing".

The filter caught "crappy" and replaced it with a false accusation. I think that is pretty crappy.

"For crying out loud" do you realize how many words are in the bible that are considered taboo in our churches?

Euphemisms are always going to be around "the man relieved himself against the wall" 1st samuel 25:22 "the Child who is not legitimate cannot enter into the congregation of the Lord" Deut 23:2 "and Abraham saddled his donkey" Gen 22:3.

It is truly one reason why our language is alive and not dead.

Study the etymology of the word "screw" (as in I screwed up) and you will find that expression was around for a long time before that word became a euphemism for something else. The expression originally had nothing off-color in intent, but for the last few years, it has. Ever since that word became a euphemism for the other word, every expression with the word "screw" in it is considered off-color, even though those expressions have been around for a lot longer (and often has to do with thumb-screws and other benign words).

The Titanic went through a known ice field, with a rescue ship's wireless receiver signed off, and grossly inadequate lifeboat space. Is this why it was said to be triple-screwed  ?

Now, that is a triple entendre, if I've ever heard one...

I voted no. I began swearing when I was in the 6th grade. as I become older my vocabulary became worse.:tear:  At that time I didn''t understand how wrong those words were. I asked God for help in watching my words. I say Jumping Jeehosapher, and other thingsI remember hearing on Gunsmoke or Bonanza or maybe Little House On The Prarie.. Sometimes jumping Jeehosapher comes out of my mouth before I knowwhatI would have said in its place.

Good poll, unfortunately I swear way too much, something I am very conscious of having returned to Christianity. I swear when I am stressed and it is "not substituted words" either, best I can do is under my breath or out of hearing.

When I am being generally incoherent, too lazy to think of the right word I say things like "great snapping cod fish" or "by Jupiter" (an oldie but a goodie) and they mean just that.

Any thoughts on breaking this foul habit:tear: will be apreciated...you can pm me if appropriate.:flower:

I am getting a lot of smiles from some of the posts. Sometimes (not often) a swear word will slip out and I have to apologize to God, and then change to the substitute word. :saint:
    :praise:
