This is out out bounds for a government-run school to do.

Maine middle school to offer birth control

PORTLAND, Maine (AP)-- After an outbreak of pregnancies among middle school girls, education officials in this city have decided to allow a school health center to make birth control pills available to girls as young as 11.

King Middle School will become the first middle school in Maine to make a full range of contraception available, including birth control pills and patches. Condoms have been available at King's health center since 2000.

Students need parental permission to access the school's health center.

But treatment is confidential under state law, which allows the students to decide whether to inform their parents about the services they receive.

There are no national figures on how many middle schools provide such services. Most middle schoolers range in age from 11 to 13.

Birth Control Allowed at Maine Middle School

"The Portland school board on Wednesday approved a measure allowing middle-school students to gain access to prescription birth control medications without notifying parents," reports The New York Times. "The proposal, from the Portland Division of Public Health, calls for the independently operated health care center at King Middle School to provide a variety of services to students, including immunizations and physical checkups in addition to birth-control medications and counseling for sexually transmitted diseases, said Lisa Belanger, an administrator for Portland's student health centers."

In "Why We Fight: How Public Schools Cause Social Conflict," Neal McCluskey, policy analyst with Cato's Center for Educational Freedom, writes:

"Public schooling, it is assumed, has been the gentle flame beneath the great American melting pot. ... Unfortunately, the reality is very different from those idealized assumptions. Indeed, rather than bringing people together, public schooling often forces people of disparate backgrounds and beliefs into political combat. ... To end the fighting caused by state-run schooling, we should transform our system from one in which government establishes and controls schools, to one in which individual parents are empowered to select schools that share their moral values and educational goals for their children."

So, let's get this straight...schools are permitted to encourage sexual relations among students; but you can be suspended for simply hugging someone from the opposite sex while at school.
    OK...where's the wall? :BangHead:

    I agree.

Sex ed isn't the schools job, it's the parents and churches job.

A young girl on an HBO special, "Middle school confessions," said sex ed makes them more eager to start having sex.

Sex ed needs to be taken out of every school. Since some of us pay taxes to schools we need to start insisting that this happens.

We can't help anyone sin better, because there's no such thing as "safe" sex. That's why it's reserved for marriage.
