I've been involved in AWANA at 3 different churches. I've functioned as a Commander and as a leader in different age groups (from cubbies through 24/7).

On the whole, the concept is great. For younger kids it works well. As the kids get older, they begin to not enjoy the handbook time and council time.

I was an RA growing up and loved it. Too bad that NAMB has pretty much abandoned the curriculum.

At the church where I get to serve we do AWANA and love it. Great, great program. I'd encourage anyone to utilize it.

Nope, and I have no children. I grew up without attending on Wed nights at church and they had church training on Sun nights.

I was an AWANA clubber from Kindergarten through Junior High, then became a leader while in college. The hundreds of Bible verses I memorized during those years have stayed with me. God has used them to remind me of his influence in my life and I've been able to draw on those verses when confronted by others needing spiritual help.

Sometimes we don't have time to grab a Bible and search for a certain verse--but when the verse is committed to memory, we can recall it to help in certain situations. The one problem I have is that I remember the verses, but I don't always remember the references.

I wasn't involved in AWANA, but in a similar program "King's Kids". I was there from 2nd grade to 6th grade, and competed each year in the year end state competition in the Bible Quiz category. It was fun, and made learning the Bible very entertaining.

We have AWANA at our church up to Sparks. The AWANA program is great for memorizing scripture; Awana is great in emphasizing the grammar stage of learning. For this reason, I am a fan of AWANA.

However, when a child begins getting into the logic stage of their learning development, we wanted to incorporate basic theology along with memorization of Scripture and a catechism (utilizing both grammar and logic). We also wanted to make our lessons that emphasize the key doctrines instead of just being a story time.

My wife and I designed the curriculum we are currently using for the grades above sparks but below the youth. We incorporate 26 different key doctrines and the verses that support it. AWANA is great in helping our children to get ready for our group. Our curriculum will hopefully get them ready for the middle school and high school program that is more intent on theological training.

Our goal, if our children go through three years of our group, they will have been provided three years of solid doctrine that can be built on by the Youth group where they study Systematic Theology.

We have a great AWANA program in our church. I have personally worked with Puggles and Cubbies and enjoyed every moment.

I have the same problem, but the verses are the most important part, anyway.

OK, but not the greatest for a smaller church. Takes lots of people, and cost lots of money.

Leans toward the fundamentalist side of the evangelical world, which I don't care for and emphasizes AWANA missions, instead of church missions, which again I don't care for.

Better to have kids memorizing scripture then not, but not anywhere close to a kids program that I would choose to have in my church. As soon as I see AWANA, I pretty much know this church isn't be for me.

Don't know if this is still true, but their required doctrinal statement used to pretrib, which I could never sign and in fact didn't one year at a church I served, we stopped the AWANA program the next year.
