Cellphone boosters?

    My wife and I live in an rural area where we get little to no cellphone coverage. Wifey has an iPhone5c and periodocially gets one bar, but not enough to carry on a conversation, but does sporadically get a text from someone. What are some good boosters that I could buy off of ebay?

    Also, how do each of them operate? I have been told some plug into the router and are their own mini-cellphone tower and some plug into a wall and an antenna is placed on the outside and enhances/strengthens what little signal we get.

    Please help me out!!
