    John 17:
    1. After Jesus spoke these words, and lifted up His view into heaven, He said, “Father, the hour has come, glorify your Son that your Son may glorify you.”
    2. Just as you gave Him authority over all flesh so that He will give eternal life to those you have given to Him.
    3. Moreover, this is eternal life – that they would know the only true God and Jesus Christ, the One you sent.
    4. I glorified you on earth by finishing the work you gave Me to do.
    5. Now Father, glorify Me alongside you with the glory I had with you before the world existed.
    6. I revealed your name to the disciples you have given Me out of the world; they were yours, and you have given them to Me. They have carefully kept your word.
    7. Now they know that everything you have given Me is from you.
    8. Because I have given them the declarations you have given Me and they took hold of them and truly understand I came from you and believe you sent Me.
    9. I ask for these disciples, and not for the world, but for these you have given Me, because they are your chosen ones.
    10. Both all mine are yours and yours are mine and I have been glorified by them.
    11. These are in the world, but I am no more in the world and am coming to you. Holy Father protect them by your name, which you have given Me, that they may be one just as we are one.
    12. While I was with them in the world, I protected, by your name, those you had given me, and none of them perished, except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.
    13. But now, I am coming to you, and saying these things in the world, that they might have My joy fulfilled in themselves.
    14. I have given them your word, but the world hates them because they are not like the world, just as I am not like the world.
    15. I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you protect them from evil.
    16. They are not like the world just as I am not like the world.
    17. Set them apart in your Truth; your Word is Truth.
    18. Just as you sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.
    19. I sanctify Myself for their sakes, because then they may be set apart in Truth.

Well, you have made a grand total of one adjustment.
    Still left unchanged.
This was the sole item you changed.
All of the above still applies in these five verses.

    John 17:
20 Not for these only do I pray, but for those also who believe in me through their word, (WEB)

As before, I would substitute the antecedent (disciples) for the pronouns for clarity.

Yet, I am asking not only for the disciples, but also for the ones who will believe into Me, through the disciples’ testimony.

    John 17:
23 I in them, and you in me, that they may be perfected into one; that the world may know that you sent me, and loved them, even as you loved me. (WEB)

We need to pause here and consider what is being said. "I in them" probably refers to the disciples, and subsequently others, indwelt with the Spirit of Christ. "You in Me" refers to the unity (oneness) of each Person of the Trinity with the other two Persons. Thus when an individual is indwelt, they are made at one with God. Thus they are holy and blameless and have been made perfect. So the idea is that when God transfers a person spiritually into Christ and then indwells the person with the Spirit of Christ, they are one with the Trinity.

This indwelling and unity with God will then result in the world knowing that Jesus is the Anointed One sent by God and therefore that you love them (those set apart in Christ) just as you love Me.

Putting the message together: "I in them and you in Me that they may be perfected into oneness with Us, so that the world may know that you sent Me and loved them just as you love Me."

    John 17:
    24. Father, I desire that they also whom you have given me be with me where I am, that they may see my glory, which you have given me, for you loved me before the foundation of the world. (WEB)

First what is it that Jesus desires? That His disciples witness His crucification? I think so.

Now just what was the glory given to Jesus? To be the Lamb of God? I think so.

Now why was Jesus given this cup? Because the Father loved the Son!

And when was this cup, this glory, given to Jesus? Before the foundation of the world, before creation. See 1 Peter 1:20.

As usual we will avoid using the confusing who/whom.

Putting it all together: Father, I desire that those you have given to Me be with Me where I am, that they may see My glory, which you have given to Me before the foundation of the world because you love Me.

    John 17:
    25. Righteous Father, the world hasn’t known you, but I knew you; and these knew that you sent me. (WEB)

Righteous Father may be the best we can do, but the idea seems more narrowly focused on the Father as just in all he does.

The world, as least many OT saints certainly knew about God, having gained approval through faith. So I think Jesus is using "known" to refer to having a more intimate relationship, i.e. indwelling of the Father and the Son, which would occur in the future. Of course Jesus does have that intimate relationship with the Father, and His disciples "know" that Jesus was sent by the Father.

Putting it together: Righteous and Just Father, the world does not know you, but I know you, and these disciples know that you sent Me.

    John 17:
    26. I made known to them your name, and will make it known; that the love with which you loved me may be in them, and I in them.” (WEB)

Taking the view provided in the NET footnote, Jesus has not only made known, but will continue (via the Spirit of Christ) to make know the name of the Father.

Next we have stuck with agape simply translated as love, but here in the final verse, I think sacrificial love bring home the message with more clarity.

Putting it together: I have made your name known to the disciples, and will continue to make it known; so that the sacrificial love you have for Me may also be in them as I am in them.

In verse 8 "declarations" is awkward and unnecessary. Stick with the Word.

    Why make it complicated?

"I gave them the words you gave me..."

Are you rendering it differently just to be be different?

You gave no rationale for ending the verse with "because they are your chosen ones."

Most translations render it like the NIV : "for they are yours."

    By whose authority? Yours?
Aside from your furniture moving in the verse --your rendering is a bit clumsy.

    Look at the NIV :
"I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you...

In verse 8 you use the terminology "declarations" --at least by being inconsistent here it turns out better.

There can be no valid reason for you to use two different wordings for the very same thing in Greek. Either employ "sanctify" twice or "set apart" twice.
