After a little more work this evening, I've been able to add two more ebooks to the blog! This time around, it's Arthur Pink's Spiritual Growth and The Attributes of God. Enjoy!

I have a question for you both....off the subject (if it gets derailed lets go PM). The only church that teaches DoG within my area is a Non Denominational one. The pastor is a grad of Westminister but a while ago he flipped it from Baptist to Non Denom. Plus he doesnt hold or teach any confessional platform & he is more New Covenant theology than anything. I disagree with all these stances but he really is the only game in town from any Reformed perspective. What do I do? The closest Reformed baptist church is over an hour away.

I attend a more-or-less traditional, non-confessional, independent Baptist church that is not of the Reformed variety; however, I'm of a reformed perspective, and I view all of the DoG as being founded in Scripture. The region that I live in has mostly liberal churches, including the contemporary Lutheran, PCUSA Presbyterian, Episcopalian, and Universalist Unitarian (there are even a couple of Church of Christ Scientist churches in these parts). If I didn't have my current church, I could make a case for not attending these others, based on major doctrinal differences (e.g., refusing to call sin "sin", admitting openly gay clergy, having a low view of Scripture, etc.).

If it were down to minor doctrinal differences, however, I would be under obligation to find a church that operated according to sound, Biblical principles; moreover, with church members who put those principles into practice.

I strongly disagree with the poster who, apparently not a fan of Pink or Calvinism, referenced an article that promoted the idea that those with Calvinistic perspective eventually run themselves out of fellowship with other believers. I should point out that a huge swath of Protestantism believes in the Doctrines of Grace and accepts them as being Biblically founded. For the past 120 years, American churches have drifted further and further from Scriptural truth, and I can't help but agree with MacArthur that the charismatic movement has had much to do with perverting the course of American protestantism. Spurgeon, who is often quoted and generally admired by most who call themselves Baptist, strongly supported the Doctrines of Grace, attesting that, to the best of his reading, they were scriptural. There is also the endorsement of Spurgeon's predecessor, John Gill. And then, there are centuries of protestants, predating the decline of the American church, who never considered the Doctrines of Grace to be anything but the Bible's teaching on God's sovereignty, the sufficiency of Christ, and the atonement.

All that comes to the purpose of establishing the blog. That is, to offer the works of those whose ministry it was to make a call to true religion and to correct the course of wayward churches. It's not a blog dedicated to Pink, although I have posted a number of his works. In the future, I'll be posting more J.C. Ryle and John Owen. You'll never find any Joel Osteen or Joyce Meyer there.

have you tried non reformed baptist churches in the area?

As several of them would hold to DoG as the type of Sotierology, but would hot to more dispy for eschatology !

I'm sorry to hear that's your situation. It is almost that way for me here, where the dominant belief is LDS, followed by a series of churches who have no regard for the Bible. My current church is dispensational, but I don't view that as a major stumbling block. The truth is, I probably wouldn't feel as at home in a conservative Presby church, because of their violent reaction to differences in eschatology. I also have differing views on baptism, so for me, Baptist it is.

One of the issues that I struggle with is mode of worship. There are a number of churches that I'm simply not comfortable in because of the contemporary worship format. I cant stand the feeling that the motive of the church is to entertain those who are in attendance. More and more churches are resorting to entertainment to try and increase membership. I often wonder what I'll do when I can no longer find a church that worships with a piano and a hymnal.

We used to have a guy here....fresh off the SBC Southern Seminary boat who told me that all churches without praise bands (you need them to bring in the youth) were in fact dead churches  my son is 20 & he thinks praise bands suck....personally, I agree. When that day comes, I will stay home.

does it bother you Walter that a pastor who holds to Baptist distinctives would change the church's name to Non-Denom? It does me ....It actually pisses me off. Add to it that they now do not follow any confessions of faith & conduct alter calls.....then I question why the heck I endure that crap. To me its simply a weekly endurance test rather than a happy experience.

There are only 2 baptist churches within 50 mikes of me & one is a family run General Baptist & the other one is Arminian. Guess which one told me I was like the lost guy in Bunyans " Pilgrims Progress" ....probably cause unwilling to become an Arminian & preferred DoG...LOL

And your spin to this is........what? Pink was a failure?

Arthur Pink was an absolute genius, gifted by God, at bringing out the types within scripture. His writings has awakened within many of God's lambs an appreciation of the written word that they possess. Your gripe with him is that he would be considered a 'high' Calvinist, so anything you can spin to shed him in a bad light, you, Jerome, will do.

[edit] I do know that in his last days he attempted to write against and discredit the dispensationalism that he had once supported (as is the case with many of us EX dispensationalists).

" ..."the widespread circulation of his writings after his death made him one of the most influential evangelical authors in the second half of the twentieth century." His writing sparked a revival of expository preaching and focused readers' hearts on biblical living. Yet, even today, Pink is left out of most biographical dictionaries and overlooked in many religious histories.

Arthur Pink was a great man of God.

Actually Kentuk, I love Arthur Pink & considering today's poor excuse for churches, I could well understand his plight. RIP my Brother in Christ.

Also Dr Walter.....I love what you are doing with the blog. In addition, may I suggest a Forum that allows for Baptist Believers in Doctrines of Grace a place to discuss the scriptures without being harassed by malcontents. That would be a beautiful thing if your up to it! .....you could even let the other Doctor Walter in now that he is a Biblicist
