    1. "Evangelical" began to be first to refer to the Protestant Reformation, those who were protesting Rome.

    2. In classical Evangelicalism held to the solas, Lating for "only."

    a. Sola scriptura-Scripture alone as opposed to Rome's Scripture and Traditions of the church.

    b. Soli Christi-Christ alone, correcting an unbiblical view of Christ.

    c. Sola gratia-Grace alone, correcting another unbiblical view of grace.

    d. Sola fide-Faith alone, correcting an error to the instrumental cause of justification.

    e. Soli Deo Gloria-To God alone be the glory.

    3. These solas captured what it meant to be an evangelical. "Evangelical" is from the Greek word for "gospel." It had to do with the true gospel.

    4. Also, classic Evangelicalism restore the believer as a believer/priest as opposed to Rome and at the same time, showing a division of church and state.

    5. Today, evangelical refers to just about anyone or even anything, from the man who denies the solas to the seminaris that deny authority and reliability of Scripture.

    6. Baptists who hold to the above in their positive forms are evangelicals in the classical sense of the word.

or you could just say Evangelicals are more an umbrella term for Protestants and Baptists are a particular branch of that term...;)

Good explanation above, I think it is right on.

Baptists are part of evangelicalism, like Methodists, Lutherans, Assembly of God, Presbyterians, etc.

One can be a member of a Baptist Church and be called a Baptist but not be born again. Nobody can be evangelical unless he is evangelistic.
