"I have lived in the pursuit of a vision, both personal and social. Personal: to care for what is noble, for what is beautiful, for what is gentle; to allow moments of insight to give wisdom at more mundane times. Social: to see in imagination the society that is to be created, where individuals grow freely, and where hate and greed and envy die because there is nothing to nourish them. These things I believe, and the world, for all its horrors, has left me unshaken".

    Bertrand Russell

Crabby, are you purposefully posting quotes from people that are non-Christians, or in this case, outright opponents of religion? What is your take on the quote? Why post quotes and then not offer any of your own commentary? Are you looking simply to provoke (as would be indicated by posting a quote and nothing else), or provoke discussion (as would be indicated by offering some commentary)?

He's a troll. We've been saying it for years.

"Religion is something left over from the infancy of our intelligence, it will fade away as we adopt reason and science as our guidelines." Bertrand Russell

I've always found that one interesting. Not because I believe it true, but because the worldview, now passé, that it represented.

No, but even non-Christians say things that have a ring of truth or wisdom sometimes.

Accept truth where you find it. My take, though Russell would disagree, is that Christians should work for this type of world, doing away with hatred, envy, war, strife, etc.

I agree. Quotes from those in the past must always be viewed in the context of the times in which they lived.

Russell was obviously wrong in his thinking on this topic. He wrote some interesting stuff. However, I often disagreed with him. An idea can be interesting even while being one I disagree with.

“Generosity is not giving me that which I need more than you do, but it is giving me that which you need more than I do.” Khalil Gibran

(Another author I like, although I disagree with his beliefs. At one time I had a substantial Gibran collection...but over time and neglect it as dwindled)
