Last sunday, my church, Southcross Community Church(American Baptist) let my uncle Jeff dress up as Santa and give the kids teddy bears. Now I am wondering if your church does that. Is that normal????

Personally, I think parents can decide whether they want "Santa" in their homes, but we ought to keep him out of church. Church is not about entertaining people or meeting cultural norms, it is about edifying the body of Christ (most of whom are not children).

Is that normal? Probably. Is that scriptural? No.

Nope. We let the real Christmas celebrants appear. Joseph, Mary, baby Jesus, etc.

One of the elders at my old church dressed up as Santa once for the children's service.

It was actually pretty cool. He told them the Christmas story and told them who he "really" was.

So now, not only did they get to hear about the baby Jesus, they got to hear about the Christian origins of Santa Claus.

See, my church did not do that. My unc did not tell the kids who he was, but they saw him change in the backroom.....

    No.

I would not have Santa in a service for children.

Absolutely, why not. Btw...the children are the church, don't know where that unscriptural idea came from but children are very the church.

I'm with rl vaughn, santa does not belong in the church. IMO the man who dressed up as santa to tell the story of the birth of Jesus does not belong in the church. What happens at Easter does someone dress up as the easter bunny and explain the resurrection? Church is for the worship of Jesus Christ and after all it's called the house of God... Brother Glen

In my humble opinion there is nothing wrong with Santa Claus in a church party. But since it clearly bothers some people that alone is reason enough to not do it!

    Man that’s a novel idea!
I don’t think it would work because most of the kids wouldn’t have a costume  [IMG]

Interesting thought...dress like Christians. ;) I wonder in today's world what would be the appropriate costume for a Christian? :D

What if you were a slightly overweight Christian who dressed in a big red suit and had a white beard? ;)

My idea behind my statement was that, we're so caught up in dressing up "like a christian" for church and yet we have a problem with a dressed up santa visiting for one day....uggg whatever.

How do Christians dress up for church? :D
I come from Texas where the fashion for church is ecclectic - to say the least.

Also, what exactly does santa have to do with celebrating the birth of our Savior?

Well in my opinion Chritians should dress how they feel most comfortable...but anyway Santa has nothing to do with celebrating the birth of our Saviour and technically neither does Christmas since December isn't his birthday. It's just simply a time we celebrate, Santa is just simply a fun thing to do for the kids...I see nothing wrong with it.

I would have a huge problem with Santa coming in and giving the kids presents. Just like I would have a problem with the Easter Bunny giving out eggs at Easter.

We need to really be teaching the real meaning of holidays. What you allow your children to be exposed to at home is up to you but I really don't think this should take place at church.

I think in church we should be learning what the Bible says about these things not worldly characters that take away the real meaning of these holidays.

    Just my two cents.

    Jane.
