BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- The Iraqi High Tribunal on Sunday sentenced a combative Saddam Hussein and two other defendants to death by hanging for a brutal crackdown in 1982 in the Shiite town of Dujail.
Despite a curfew, Iraqis in Baghdad spilled out into the streets to celebrate the verdict. But protests were held in Saddam Hussein's hometown.
"The Saddam Hussein era is in the past now, as was the era of Hitler and Mussolini," said Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, calling Hussein the worst ruler ever in Iraq.(Watch what's next for Hussein -- 3:13 [IMG])
"We want an Iraq where all Iraqis are equal before the law," he said. "The policy of discrimination and persecution is over."
The case will be automatically appealed to the Appellate Chamber of the Iraqi High Tribunal. The defense has 30 days to file any motions.
There is no limit to how long the appeals process can take.
The appeals process was likely to take three to four weeks once the formal paperwork was submitted, a court official told The Associated Press.
If the Appellate Chamber upholds the conviction and sentence, Hussein must be executed within 30 days.

    Probably

    Probably

Didn't we still hang as a death penalty in recent times?

    Yes. Yes. No.

Now that this is settled, I think all you deluded people who thought the Iraqis would let him off owe the Iraqis an apology. How about it?

Wow! They have gained the American way. Invade a foreign sovereign country and hang the leader. How right is that?

What if some other country came and did that to President Bush?

Cheers, but a sorry day in Iraq that the world may live long enough to regret.

Based on the well know history of this madman, don't you think the Iraqi people needed help in ousting this despot?

Why is that so hard to understand, Jim?

The comparison has been (rightly) made to Hitler in the late 30's. Had we tossed him out on his ear then, I dare say that WWII would not have happened the way it did and 6 mil Jews would not have died aliong with tens of thousands of other people of conscience who opposed the Nazi's.

Sometimes, we do learn from history. It appears that this is one of those times.

Wasn't it an Iraqi court that convicted Saddam?

It isn't over until the fat lady sings so don't celebrate too soon. I still say he will get off. The matter is on appeal & he will end up in London or in Bahrain or Qatar or somewhere to live out his days in opulence. He will never see the gallows. Oh, and BTW, all these video clips we are seeing of Iraqi people dancing in the street celebrating Saddam's future demise (it might even be staged, who knows anymore???) would probably blow away an American soldier in a heart beat if given the opportunity. Strangely, the American election is only hours away. What a coincidence.

Somedays I don't think it would take a foreign government -- appears there are some Democrats who would prefer this scenario.

Actually, this trial is not unsimilar to those of Nazis after WWII. Except the Iraqis held this one.

We aren't hanging him, the Iraqi people are. And I am sure they had death penalty before we got there, it has nothing to do with us, but with him and his horrid crimes against humanity.

I asked a question earlier down about hanging in the U.S. I'm still digging, but it is a bit depressing to see all the ways we've done away with our miscreant citizens.

BUT as of 1997, Washington state still allowed inmates to request hanging.

Delaware conducted the last hanging in 1996. (That option is no longer open.)

The U.S. Army last hanged a man in 1961. (Hanging and the firing squad were routinely used during World War II.)

Washington allows hanging if the guilty party requests it; New Hampshire allows hanging if a lethal injection cannot be given.

If you believe that, I have the proverbial bridge to sell, cheap!

The trial was so corrupted and lopsided by any stretch of the imagination, I am sure Mr. Bush and his cronies had their two cents worth.

Stalin killed millions of his own people. The Chinese slaughtered their own people. The Japanese killed British, Canadian, Australian and American service people and nurses......we didn't demand their emperor be hanged.

Mr. Hussein was the leader of a sovereign nation, and his own people were executed. He didn't have foreign aid or intervention. Shucks, he was even financed by the USA to invade Iran. It was ok to kill then! I don't get it.

    Cheers,

    Jim

It's just business as usual Jim. Make money arming them and disarming them...it's a win win situation for the few in the right positions. It's great work if you can get it, of course one must have no conscience to do it. Which pretty much sums up most of the world's politicos and their biggest supporters the mega multinational companies these days. But look at the bright side...with Iraq win or lose the war the assets there have finally been privatized. We call it liberation in the USA.

"Give me control of a country's money and I care not who writes the laws."
Don't know who said it. I suppose it was Rothschild or Bildeburg, or some such fellow.
In any case, what's the big deal? We prevented another potential holocaust against Israel, so we done good.

    See?

    Business as usual.

Now if we could only secure the Litani river and all that water for Israel life would be perfect. :1_grouphug:

They sure looked like Iraquis in that court room to me. And what, you think they didn't have executions in Iraq before? You think we started that, they didn't know how to exectue till we got there.
Why are you filled with so much hatered for the united states?(this is not new, but an ongoing symptom for you)
Maybe you should keep your bridge Jim, you need it.

I have been reading different sites all over the web and US hatred by our northern neighbors is very common, at least by they who post on different boards.

I could care less what other nations think of us. I figure they ought to clean their OWN side of the street before they make disparaging comments about the condition of OUR side. Until they can do that, then I take their comments for what they are worth, like blow drying my dogs coat after a bath.

Execution is execution, pretty much. I'm surprised to see a Texan disparaging the practice.

How many judges and lawyers (or their relatives) were killed in the course of this "trial"?

Criminals who receive capital punishment have a very low rate of recidivism.

Agree with the sentence or not, is there anyone here that doubts he was guilty of the crimes he was charged with?
