Have you ever seen that bumper sticker?

Some people say that God should be the pilot.

What are your thoughts? BTW this is not a facetious question. I would like a serious discussion about this.

A co-pilot is there to assist the pilot as needed, and take over in the absence of the pilot.
A pilot is the person who takes the action to move forward and depends on his co-pilot for assistance.

So the question for the above poll is: WHO SHOULD BE THE CO-PILOT?

And using scripture wouldn't be a bad ideal either!

Ditto! I suggest getting in the back seat and leaving the driving to God.

I would suggest that God has no co-pilot. He is not willing to share His power, authority or glory with anyone.

We should not view ourselves as co-pilots, but grateful passengers. :)

No but I have seen this one, "If God is your co-pilot then that explains your driving".

    1. I voted for another answer. God should be the pilot, for He's the One giving the directions and He has not consulted us on where we should be landing. As a pilot He has the ultimate good reputation of taking His passengers safely to their destination.

    2. But there are other systems of theologies that would have us believe that we are co-pilots.

I too voted for "other answer" we don't even belong near a steering wheel, navigators console, or the cockpit. In reality, if we're doing it right we're just about level with the maintainence crew...;)

Here's one of my favorite Shel Silverstein poems (actually, they are all my favorites). It explains why we can never take the wheel. Please don't pick apart this simple little rhyme.....just take it for what is it - a literary allusion as to why God is God and we are not.

    God's Wheel
from the book "A Light in the Attic" (1981)
    by Shel Silverstein

God says to me with a kind of smile,
"Hey how would you like to be God awhile
    And steer the world?"
"Okay," says I, "I'll give it a try.
    Where do I set?
    How much do I get?
    What time is lunch?
    When can I quit?"
"Gimme back that wheel," says God.
    "I don't think you're quite ready yet."

God should be the pilot...but He also doesn't need our back seat driving!

Well, if God's the pilot, he sure doesn't need any assistance from me! So, I voted God is my co-pilot because I have to make decisions on where I'm going to go and what I'm going to do, and I turn to God for assistance in making those decisions. :godisgood:

Well, here's my $0.0005 (after taxes):

I guess the Lord's my pilot, and I would be a flight attendant...you see, God's driving, and I served the Lord's Supper recently. So, wouldn't juice and wafers qualify as "in flight meal?"

(though I'm not too keen on being a male flight attendant. But if I didn't do it that way, the humor would have broken down, and we can't have THAT). :D

I think this whole analogy is garbage. We make decisions about our own lives and we have to live with them. Hopefully we try to do it according to God's word, but airline pilots also must abide by their airline's word... but they still have to make the deicisons as they go, not call the company president on SELCAL (or do they use that any more?) about every little thing while in flight. If you want biblical support for this position, consider Moses as the Israelites were stuck with the Red Sea in front of them and the Egyptian charioteers behind them. Moses prayed, and the Lord replied, "Why do you cry to me? Tell the sons of Israel to go forward!"

I have always found this bumper sticker, and others like it, offensive. God is Lord of your Life, and demands the up most respect and fear.

With that said, I have found some of the responses very thought provoking.

That is the exact reason for this thread.
Actually, there are many analogies we can bring from this.
Just look at Christ, the Scriptures refer to him as the Shepard, as well as the sheep. So in essences we could be the Pilot, the co-pilot, or even the flight attendant!

    Thanks for the great responses.

PS just wondering how many pastors may throw this into next weeks message?

I have not seen that particular bumper sticker, but I don't think God is either "pilot" or "co-pilot". Rather, He (in the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ) is the actual route. Jesus says in John 14.6:

"I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me."
But if I had to choose between "pilot" and "co-pilot" I would go for "pilot". As the Good Shepherd, Jesus leads His sheep. Left to themselves, the sheep wander.

On board an aircraft ---- that would make you the Navigator---not the Co-Pilot

During WW2 the American B-17 and B-24 Heavy Bombers required a Pilot and Co-Pilot ----- on the other hand --- the British flew the Lancaster Heavy Bomber in which there was no Co-Pilot

In the case of this poll --- I must ask for duty aboard the Lancaster with Almighty God at the controls.

Personally, I think it's wrong theology, but then I think most Christian bumper stickers are pretty stupid. :tonofbricks:
