    National Wolf Awareness Week
Celebrating Wolf Awareness Week 2008 during the week of October 12-18.

[IMG]National Wolf Awareness Week is a time to dispel misconceptions about wolves and to teach about the important role these predators play in maintaining healthy ecosystems. It takes place the 3rd week of October every year.

The wolf is a striking symbol of wild nature, yet it has long been shrouded by myth and superstition. Earlier this century, wolves were methodically exterminated from nearly all of their historic range.

    Lots of information here:

Yeah, we're aware of wolves, up here...

....n a nutshell, that was what came out of a public meeting held in Columbus last week. That meeting was reported on in Wednesday's Gazette under the headline of "Ranchers tell officials of wolf frustrations." Montana Congressman Denny Rehberg facilitated the session, which brought together landowners and representatives of county, state and federal governments. For 90 minutes, everyone had their say.
So what did the meeting accomplish? Well, the meeting did provide some vindication for people who were saying these things would happen years ago. And, it set the stage for continuing wolf problems that are going to increase both in number and in geographic distribution in the years to come.
That's not big news. It's not a solution. Like a bad movie, this was all so horribly predictable.
Back in 1995, when wolves were reintroduced in Yellowstone National Park, there was simply too much ignorance among bring-back-the-wolf-backers who looked at the 2.2 million acres of the park and thought it was a big place.
The park would offer plenty of landscape to absorb a wolf population, they figured. Add in the national forest ground around the park and they figured there was plenty of room for any wolf overflow as well. And hey, look at all those elk and deer and bison that the wolves have to eat in Yellowstone - why would they ever want to leave?
Unfortunately, wolves don't exactly work that way and Yellowstone has no wolf-proof fences.
Wolves are incredibly mobile creatures, as witnessed early on when wolf numbers were low and there was still a pack that that annually left Yellowstone and took an approximately 300-mile loop tour of the Crazy Mountains each winter before heading back.
Wolf are also opportunistic predators. Almost all predators make their living by feeding on the easiest and most abundant prey. They build a knowledge base of what's fed them in the past and apply it when they need a meal in the future. That's how predators survive.....

There was also this good news last month:

    Wolves protected again!
FWS voluntarily removes own delisting rule

WASHINGTON - According to recent statements by senior U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) officials, FWS intends to rescind its own wolf delisting rule - issued in March - sometime this week. This will place the Northern Rockies gray wolf back under federal protections.

We'll get them taken off the endangered list.....even the democrats around here have brains. This fight won't end, and because of the unbending "no wolf must perish" mentality, I bet ther'll be a lot of them buried in the backcountry.

I certainly hope that wolves flourish enough to eventually be taken off the endangered list.

They do, Ken. The ranchers are without a voice, on this one. I think Montana is about to jettison some incumbents.

We don't have a lot of wolves here, but people here kill wolves, they attack cattle, other farm animals, pets, and even children, or actually anyone child or not. People are used to packs of wild animals, dogs, wolves, coyote, fox, no one bothers to go looking for them to hunt, but when they come around and cause trouble then they do.

I didnt know that they have wolves in Arkansas. Interesting. I know that they have plenty of wolves in Alaska though. And Sarah Palin is the governor there. Hmmmmmmmm. Where in the connection here. Do you want to fill us in Ken? Is there some left-handed back door attack here somewhere? Why the sudden interest in the protection of wolves?

I was just curious if there were records of wolves killing people in recent years. I found this at:

    http://historylist.wordpress.com/2008/05/29/human-deaths-in-the-us-caused-by-animals/

I thought it very interesting that more people died as a result of pet dogs than any other mammal.
    From the link:

I don't know what that has to do with killing wolves that are eating your livestock, just thought it was interesting.

We had a wolf restocking program here in WNC for about 5 years. They introduced red wolves into the GSMNP hoping that the smaller red wolves could maintain a population easier than the native but extinct Grey wolves (extinct in NC and TN, not worldwide). They were also hoping the wolves would help stabilize our new elk population. The elk are doing fine, the wolves had to go. When left on their own they ate pets and livestock because they were easier to catch than deer and elk. Then somebody had the great idea of hauling the road killed deer from the park to a central location and feeding them to the wolves. What they ended up with were semi-tame wolves that sat around waiting for park employees to bring them deer to eat.

Wolves are there; I'm aware. I don't think it takes a week for that.

Of course, it can take longer than that teach your daughters to be aware of "wolves."

Using snowmobiles to run over wolfs is not hunting

Apparently Sarah Palins family and ex-family cannot resist killing wolfs from airplance they have to run them down using snowmobiles , this after the wolfs in their natural environment have downed a caribou, these people are not even skilled shots they must use shot after shot, torment after torment using a snowmobile, no wonder the people at her rallies yell "kill!" American will reject and rebel against people like this.

RW: Okay. Next is the wolf.
    MW: Okay.

RW: And ah I understand that you were on a wolf hunt with ah CHUCK [Heath, Sarah's father] again?
    MW: Yup.

    RW: Several years ago.
    MW: Yup.

RW: Ah can you tell me about that incident?
MW: Yup. Ah we were in Beut Lake, which is...

RW: Okay, I know where that one's at.
MW: 40+ miles up the ah Denali Highway.

    RW: Mmhm.
MW: And then 8 or 10 miles in land.

    RW: Yup.
MW: And ah staying in a cabin that a buddy of his owns. And it was the early morning CHUCK comes ripping across the lake and ah comes in the cabin and says, "Get your stuff on and grab your rifle we gotta go."

RW: Was he in a sled? Is that?
    MW: Snow machine yeah.

    RW: Yeah.
MW: And I said, "Ah what's going on?" And he said, "ADRIAN's got a wolverine and 3 wolves and he's down over the hill just off the lake." And I said, "Okay." So I jumped on the snow machine and followed him out there. And when we ah got down to where we could see where a caribou had been taken down. Caribou like kill.

    RW: Mmhm.
MW: Umm I saw ADRIAN going after one wolf and CHUCK started after another one and I followed CHUCK umm and umm we got down to where the wolf was at and CHUCK shot at it with his ah he shoots a 225 (inaudible) rifle. And umm he shot it once and I and I saw it hit right in the middle of the back and it continued to run. And then he... we followed it with our snow machines and he ah shot at it again and I don't know if he hit it or not. And then it was running towards some thick brush and he umm ran into it with his snow machine. And then he ah tried to shoot it again and he hit it again umm and then...(inaudible).

RW: So he shot it two other times after the first one?
MW: Yeah. He--he hit it twice for sure that I know of and a third time I don't know if he hit it or not. And then the ah wolf ah ran through some really thick brush and there was a river or a creek or something and it was frozen over in the area and I ran my snow machine right over the thick brush and just kind of followed the tracks and came back out on the river and I was driving down the river following the tracks in the snow. And the river made a bend. A sharp bend. And when I came around the bend I could see where the wolf lost its tracks and slid ah fell and slid and I stopped my snow machine and when I stood up on my snow machine the wolf was still alive so I had like a tank commander's holster.

    RW: Mmhm.
MW: With my pistol. So I drew my pistol out and shot it. And ah it went down and I got off the snow machine and I was walking over to it and it stuck its head up again so I shot it again. An and then it died and that was it. And then after... after the wolf was dead I was there for probably I don't know 10 minutes or so and CHUCK comes running down the river and he said ADRIAN had went after another wolf and he was following ADRIAN and then he saw a wolverine and he started chasing the wolverine and it got away from him so he doubled back around and came over to where I was at and I had killed the wolf that he had shot twice and hit with the snow machine once.

RW: So he hit it with his sled too?
MW: Oh yeah he ran right into the tail end of it. It was running... he was... he was riding and you know it was running... it was quite a ways from us and we were riding snow machines to catch up to it and while it was running umm I don't know whether the wolf turned and ran in front of him or if he turned and ran into the wolf but he hit it with his snow machine. I watched him hit it. Took the tail end right out from underneath it.

RW: Was that ah after he shot it?
    MW: Yeah.

And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered. Genesis 9:2

I think it's a great time to point out that YTCBS believes everyone who believes the Genesis creation account is "insane".

Last time I pointed that out, he reminded me of how many family members I have lost in the last 8 months.

God bless Sarah Palin. It must be something for her to see putative Christians just make up stories about her.

I've settled it, brother. You brought it up on another thread. That, with your position on those of us who believe in the first chapter of Genesis, are both great tools in discrediting your input on this subject. That's without bringing up abortion.

In other words, I think you are another one of those self loathing Christians, who would rather get along with Rachel Maddow than Billy Sunday.

    Grace to you YTCBS.
