[QUOTEBarack Obama may have stumbled over his words briefly during his inauguration, but he made an even bigger blunder later Tuesday evening. The newly sworn-in President opted not to appear at what should have been one of the most important Balls on his agenda that evening - The Salute to Heroes Inaugural Ball.

The Salute to Heroes Inaugural Ball was begun in 1953 for President Dwight Eisenhower's inauguration. The event recognized recipients of the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military award. There were 48 Medal of Honor recipients in attendance, who were undoubtedly disappointed by the Commander-in-Chief's failure to show. Over the past 56 years and 14 inaugurations, no President has skipped this event - until now.

The Salute to Heroes Inaugural Ball is sponsored by the American Legion, and co-sponsored by 13 other veteran's service organizations, including those such as the Paralyzed Veterans of America and the Military Order of the Purple Heart.

Instead of attending this ball honoring our nation's heroes, Obama was busy making stops at 10 other official balls. Obama and his wife's first stop was at the Neighborhood Ball. From there they went to the Home State Ball for Illinois and Hawaii, the Commander-in-Chief Ball, the Youth Inaugural Ball, and the Home State Ball for Delaware and Pennsylvania. They finished off the night with brief appearances at the Mid-Atlantic, Western, Midwest, Eastern, and Southern regional Balls.

Celebrities were a plenty at the balls, with Stevie Wonder, Shakira, Mary. J. Blige, Faith Hill, Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, Adam Levine, will.i.am, Sting, Mariah Carey, and Leonardo DiCaprio in attendance at the Neighborhood Ball. In addition, the other nine balls also featured a star-studded lineup including Kanye West and Kid Rock at the Youth Ball, Marc Anthony at the Western Ball, and Cheryl Crow at the Western Ball.

It was the party without all of the celebrities that Obama skipped. The very people who he sought to have support him during his candidacy and campaign, who have fought to protect this country, were snubbed in favor of publicity and the opportunity to rub shoulders - yet again - with the out-of-touch Hollywood elite.

Obama hates our military. He sees them as his enemy because they have sworn to protect the Constitution. He wants his own army accountable only to himself.

I know that while he was touring foreign countries while he was campaigning, he was to visit with our troops serving in Germany. When he found out that the cameras weren't going to be there, he decided to go some place else.

Obama Skipped Out on Inaugural Ball for Medal of Honor Recipients
    Wednesday, January 28, 2009
    By Melanie Hunter-Omar

(CNSNews.com) – President Barack Obama was the first president to miss the Salute to Heroes Inaugural Ball, which recognizes Medal of Honor recipients. The Medal of Honor is considered the nation’s highest military award.

Forty-eight Medal of Honor recipients attended the ball, sponsored by the American Legion, and over the past 56 years and 14 inaugurations, dating back to Dwight Eisenhower, no president has skipped it until now.

Simple! He didn't want to be around men of honor. I would say he was ashamed to show up but that would not be true.

No matter how hard they try not to, liberals always let their guard slip enough to show us what they really think of our military personnel.

Not that it matters to you guys since you all look for more reason's to hate Obama but it appears there was more to this story. I know you're not interested in the "more to this story" since it seems the GOP bloggers really ran with this story. Some of them appear to be salivating spreading this piece of gossip.

Because there was an unprecedented number of inaugural balls this year and because each wanted the new president to attend Obama put out a statement that he would only attend official balls. The Hero ball was an unofficial ball and knew in advanced he would not attend. Keep in mind, he still attended 10 balls that night which is way above normal.

As for the Hero's ball, because Obama wasn't going to the Hero's ball, he had all the Medal of Honor winners along with 300 wounded warriors from Walter Reed Army Medical Center and their families invited to join him at his Commander and Chief ball. If you look at the pictures you can see he and Michelle dancing with members of our military. He stayed longer at this ball then he did any of the rest.

One difference and possibly a reason some of the Medal winners still attended the hero's ball was, "also subsidized hotel rooms and provided ground transportation for the winners while they were in DC". I imagine a free hotel room when you're drinking in a town loaded with police is a fairly tempting offer.

Lastly, this comment came from Dan Wheeler who is the American Legion National Adjutant

So go ahead and hate but the truth is Obama didn't snub his nose at our troops...

3462 medals have been awarded, fourteen are double recipents.
99 are still living as of October 2008.
    48 were in attendance!

    And:
Over the past 56 years and 14 inaugurations, no President has skipped this event - until now.

And I don't care what the excuse!
The American Legion, the VFW, the AmVets.... these give a forum for vets to vent...... without really giving them a voice or political influence.... so I'm not interested in the excuse one of them poses... as that only serves as confirmation of my opinion. I dare say, the majority of those vets who showed up to that ball were disappointed by the President's absence!

Obama is the first president since Eisenhower to miss the American Legion's Salute to Heroes ball. A Legion spokesman says it "does not feel offended or 'snubbed,'" and Medal of Honor winners were invited to the Commander in Chief's ball, which Obama did attend.
It is true that Obama did not attend the Salute to Heroes Inaugural Ball, and that his absence broke a 14-inauguration streak. Vice President Joe Biden did attend the ball, showing up around 11:30. American Legion spokesperson Craig Roberts told FactCheck.org that the president, vice president and first lady have all traditionally attended.

The American Legion released two statements on the matter, saying that "The Legion does not feel offended or 'snubbed' by the President’s failure to appear," expressing gratitude for Biden's appearance, and adding that "there are much more important issues to dwell on."

We reproduce both statements here, just as they were emailed to us from the Legion:

Original statement from American Legion National Adjutant Dan Wheeler: The American Legion, as it has on every inauguration evening since 1953, hosted the Salute to Heroes Inaugural Banquet & Ball on January 20th . The quadrennial event is co-sponsored by fourteen veterans service and military service organizations and honors recipients of the Medal of Honor. Forty-seven of these heroes attended this year’s event. President Obama was invited but did not attend. Vice-President Joe Biden did appear, however, and was very warmly received. From The American Legion’s point of view, the new President’s absence was understandable considering the unprecedented logistical challenges presented by the vastly increased number of visitors to this inauguration and the necessary attendant security measures. The National Adjutant of The American Legion states that, as an organization, The Legion does not feel offended or “snubbed” by the President’s failure to appear.

Second statement from Mr. Wheeler, Jan. 26, 2009: We extended an invitation as we always do. There are numerous Balls and we know he can’t attend them all. Of course, we would have loved for him to make an appearance, but he didn’t. It’s a logistical nightmare. He did meet with the troops at the Commander In Chief’s Ball, and we are grateful for that. Our Ball wasn’t about the President; it was about the Medal of Honor recipients and the veterans and families who were there. We are grateful that the Vice President appeared, and our guests were very appreciative.

That having been said, there are much more important issues to dwell on, which we intend to do. We look forward to working with the new administration on ensuring full and guaranteed funding for VA health care services, and the very best treatment for our service people who have been wounded, and on the quality of life of all members of the Armed Forces and their families, as well as the maintenance of a national security force that will deter any enemy from considering an attack on America.

We have asked the White House for comment on this matter, and will update this article should we receive a response.

Update: Shortly after we posted this story, we heard from Josh Earnest of the Presidential Inaugural Committee. He told us that the president only attended the ten official balls organized by the PIC. (The Salute to Heroes is organized by the American Legion and is unofficial.) But, Earnest told us, "in order to show due respect to the Medal of Honor winners, they were special guests at the Commander in Chief's ball," which the president attended early in the evening. Earnest didn't know how many Medal of Honor winners accepted the invitation to the Commander in Chief's ball, which is primarily targeted to military personnel, but added that the PIC also subsidized hotel rooms and provided ground transportation for the winners while they were in DC. We've updated our answer summary accordingly.
