House Republicans eye short-term debt ceiling fix, ahead of White House meeting

As House Republican leaders prepared to meet with President Obama Thursday, conservative lawmakers were exploring the possibility of a short-term increase in the debt ceiling, perhaps trying to seize the opening after the president said he would consider the option.

Members of the Republican Study Committee, the most conservative bloc in the House, told Fox News they're looking at that possibility. Their inclination is to consider a short-term increase only if there is an agreement on a broader spending framework.

But the option could help buy time for lawmakers to nail down the specifics of a longer-term deal. The U.S. government is facing what the Treasury Department says is an Oct. 17 deadline to raise the nation's debt ceiling.

FNC is reporting this morning that Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis. 1st Dist.) has proposed tying a short-term debt ceiling extension of $118 billion -- that would last about six-seven weeks -- to an equal cut in spending. The Los Angeles Times erroneously reported that GOP conservatives said the plan wouldn't fly. The Times quoted one Tea Party member as panning it, but the GOP is more interested in actually solving the crisis than the liberally-biased media are willing to give them credit. By quoting the one dissenter, they hoped to paint a picture of rebellion in the GOP. It isn't happening. Ryan's plan is going to the White House today in a meeting between GOP leaders and the Great Pretender.

House Speaker John Boehner on Thursday proposed a short-term increase in the debt ceiling as a way to avoid what administration officials warn would be an economic catastrophe, putting the idea to President Obama ahead of a high-stakes White House meeting.

Boehner and his deputies announced the proposal after pitching it to rank-and-file Republicans in a closed meeting. The plan would allow for a six-week extension of the debt ceiling with no strings attached, as long as Obama and Democrats make a "real commitment" to negotiate over the partial government shutdown and a longer-term debt-ceiling hike.

Notably, the emerging plan would not address the ongoing partial government shutdown, leaving that issue unresolved. The hope among GOP leaders is that a short-term debt-ceiling deal would bring Obama to the table to negotiate a new spending bill.
