David Phelps is such a talented Artist. Hope to see more of his work listed!

    God Bless
    Sherrie

David Phelps, born October 26, 1947, is a native and life-long resident of Eldorado, Illinois. His deep roots in the Southern Illinois region led him to become involved in his local community through civic, church, and school activities. Phelps graduated from Southern Illinois University in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Studies. He became a public school teacher and assistant principal with the Harrisburg School District.

Phelps is also lead singer for the Phelps Brothers Quartet, a gospel group that has achieved nationwide acclaim. He is an accomplished professional songwriter who has written for many artists, including the Oak Ridge Boys. As a songwriter he is an affiliate writer of Broadcast Music Inc. (BMI). Since becoming a member of Congress, he has been the hymn director of the Congressional Weekly Prayer Breakfast in the Capitol.

In 1980, Phelps was appointed to fill an unexpired term as Clerk and Recorder of Saline County. He was subsequently elected to a full term in 1982. Phelps shocked the Illinois political establishment by defeating a veteran Republican state representative in 1984. Since then, he has become a dominant political leader in Southern Illinois, and an outspoken party leader.

A forceful voice for economic development, traditional values, and improvement of rural services, Phelps had a distinguished record of accomplishment in the state legislature. He chaired the Elementary and Secondary Education Committee and was also Vice Chair of Health Care Availability and Access, Insurance, Prison Management, Personnel and Pensions, Transportation, Consumer Protection, and Energy and Environment Committees.

Currently Phelps is a member of the 107th Congress and serves on the Agriculture and Small Business Committees. As a U.S. Congressman, he has continued to fight for better schools, rural economic development, and affordable, accessible healthcare, while stressing the importance of fiscal responsibility. He also is very sensitive to issues which involve senior citizens and has worked hard for passage of a prescription drug benefit under Medicare. Congressman Phelps has consistently voted to abolish the marriage penalty and the estate tax. He is a member of the bipartisan Rural Health Care Caucus and the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of fiscally conservative Democrats.

David Phelps and his wife, Leslie, a public school teacher, live in Eldorado and attend the Star General Baptist Church. They have been married for thirty-two years and have four children and one grandchild.

    Sherrie,

I think the David Phelps you wrote about is the wrong one. This David Phelps is from the Tomball area in Texas, and graduated from Baylor University. He currently sings as 1st Tenor in the Gaither Vocal Band, and has his solo career on the side. Check out his website at www.davidphelps.com. Thanks for the post!

Day Eleven - I know I'm posting these a little faster than once a day. Sorry if that bugs you, I just get very excited about sharing some of these great songs, even though I know some of you don't agree. Here's one I posted a few weeks ago, the story of the prodigal son. In His Grip, joshua

    Prodigal Me
Shane Barnard (C) 1998 Shane Barnard

    SON:
What have I done to get me here?
Unraveled and undone, I need my Father.
What have I done? I’ve followed my feet to nowhere.
Now I’m here! As I ran, I can run no more. Prodigal me.

    The mountains to the west,
I hear them laugh at me.
They know I’m scared to cross and leave this life I lead.
Oh my pride! I give you up, a barter for my freedom.
What will they think as I come stumbling down to join their lives?

I need to cross this mountain and find my way home.
I seek no greater fortune, rescue me.
O unmerciful divide, be merciful tonight, show me the other side,
    Prodigal me.

    FATHER:
The mountains to the east, they’ve swallowed my beloved.
This house completely incomplete, where is my mortar?
Where did he go? He followed his feet to nowhere.
Please come home! You’ve done me no wrong.

Each evening I look down that road I hope and I wait for you.
And my servants they look down that road; we watch and we pray for you!

    SERVANTS:
Master, Master, who’s that man stumbling down that road?
Could it be the one? Could it be? Could it be?
Master, Master, it’s your son coming home to join our lives!

    SON:
I’m looking down this mountain, I see my way home,
There is no greater fortune, I believe!
O unmerciful divide, laugh at me no more!
I’ve reached the other side. Prodigal me!

    SINGER/NARRATOR:
Could I be the one? Could I be? Could I be?
Father, Father, we are Your sons coming home to join Your life!
We’ve finally crossed this mountain and found our way home.
We seek no greater fortune than Jesus.
O, how merciful is our God, who gave His only Son!
    O, we worship You tonight!
    Prodigal me.

Day Twelve - Rich Mullins, consumate songwriter and thinker of the 20th Century. I can't wait to get to Heaven and meet him, after Jesus and David of course. In His Grip, joshua

    To Tell Them
Rich Mullins (C) 1992 Edward Grant, Inc.

Some people came here to party,
Some people came here to pray.
Some will stay until they're sorry,
Some'll be sad to have to go away.
Some people came here to listen,
Some people came here to talk.
Some people don't know how much they've been given,
Some people thank the Lord for what little they've got.

But there's just one thing you've got to tell them,
Tell them one you've got to tell them all:
Because there ain't nobody so bad,
That the Lord can't save 'em!
Ain't nobody so good that they don't need God's love!
And there's one thing you've got to show them,
Just one thing you've got to let them see:
It don't make no difference what else that you may be wanting,
The love of God is the thing they need!
    It's the thing they need!

Some people came here on business,
    Some people came on R&R.
    Some strut around in their fancy stiches;
Some sink low because they got to hide some nasty scars.
There's some people can be so pious,
    Some people are so depraved.
Some of them seem to thrive on the quiet,
Some are just dyin' to go out and to make some waves.

Well, you can talk about fashion,
You can talk about the weather,
It's all just stuff and it all goes up in flames.
Just in case somebody comes askin',
Why don't you do 'em one better?
If you got to talk why don't you tell 'em
'Bout the things that remain the same?!

But there's just one thing you've got to tell them,
Tell them one you've got to tell them all:
Because there ain't nobody so bad,
That the Lord can't save 'em!
Ain't nobody so good that they don't need God's love!
    'Cause there's one thing you've got to show them;
Just one thing you've got to let them see:
It don't make no difference what else that you may be wanting,
The love of God is the thing you need!
    It's the thing they need!

Day Thirteen - This song is a peaceful proclamation of the fact that God is our refuge in times of trouble. In His Grip, joshua

    You Are My Stronghold
Nathan and Christy Nockels (C) 1996 Rocketown Music

Lord, You are my light and my salvation.
Whom shall I fear if You are near?
Lord, You are my peace when there is war all around me.
And even here inside me, I will have no fear.

O Lord, You're my protection from my enemies.
You set me high upon a rock and You defend my soul.
And when their ways advance against me, I am confident
That they cannot make me less, for You have made me whole.
O Lord, You are my stronghold, You are my stronghold.

Lord, You are my strength, so let my head be lifted up
That I may glory in the ways You've overcome.
And Lord, You are my hope, 'cause You've created in me
A heart that lives the victory that You've already won!

O Lord, You're my protection from my enemies.
You set me high upon a rock and You defend my soul.
And when their ways advance against me, I am confident
That they cannot make me less, for You have made me whole.
O Lord, You are my stronghold, You are my stronghold.

Day Fourteen - And now, from the early days of CCM, an oldie from Michael W. Smith's first album. In His Grip, joshua

    Could He Be the Messiah?
    Michael W. Smith and Deborah D. Smith (C) 1982 O'Ryan Music

Been here for days, I'm amazed at this teacher, Carpenter, preacher,
Lost in the crowd, I hear Him now,
    He's praying and He's saying,
    "God feed them all."
Five-thousand men, all of His friends are worried
    Find bread and hurry.
Five loaves and fish, what can He wish,
    He's praying still He's saying,
    "God feed them all!"

    Could He be the Messiah?
Miracle man, part of the plan?
    Could He be the Messiah?
Life in His hand, I understand He could be...

Meat for our needs fully He feeds our hunger Older and younger,
Twelve baskets more, can we ignore,
He knows us, is He the Christ?
God in His eyes, I realize His power,
    Need of the hour,
Jesus His name, they say He came to feed us
And receive us, is He the Christ?

    Could He be the Messiah?
Miracle man, part of the plan?
    Could He be the Messiah?
Life in His hand, I understand He could be...

    It is He the Messiah!
Miracle man, part of the plan!
    It is He the Messiah!
Life in His hand, I now understand it is He!

    Day Fifteen

    Favorite Song of All
Dan Dean (C) 1992 Dawn Treader Music

He loves to hear the wind sing
As it echoes through the pines on mountain peaks.
He loves to hear the raindrops
As they splash to the ground in a magic melody.
    He smiles in sweet approval
As the waves crash to the rocks in harmony.
Creation joins in unity to sing to Him majestic symphonies.

But His favorite song of all is the song of the redeemed,
When lost sinners now made clean lift their voices loud and strong!
When those purchased by His blood lift to Him a song of love,
There's nothing more He'd rather hear, nor so pleasing to His ear,
As His favorite song of all.

He loves to hear the angels as they sing, "Holy, holy is the Lamb,"
Heaven's choirs in harmony lift up praises to the great I AM.
But He lifts His hands for silence when the weakest saved by grace begins to sing,
And a million angels listen as a newborn soul sings, "I've been redeemed!"

His favorite song of all is the song of the redeemed,
When lost sinners now made clean lift their voices loud and strong!
When those purchased by His blood lift to Him a song of love,
There's nothing more He'd rather hear, nor so pleasing to His ear,
As His favorite song of all.

It's not just melodies and harmonies that catches his attention,
It's not just clever lines and phrases that causes Him to stop and listen.
But when any heart set free, washed and bought by Calvary begins to sing...

That's His favorite song of all, it's the song of the redeemed,
When lost sinners now made clean lift their voices loud and strong!
When those purchased by His blood lift to Him a song of love,
There's nothing more He'd rather hear, nor so pleasing to His ear,
As His favorite song of all.

Have you heard the Brooklyn Tabernacle version of this song. It's great - we sang it in our choir a few years ago.

Day Sixteen - Check out the next few... from artists you may not recognize at first. I encourage you to find their music and enjoy it! In His Grip, joshua

    Find My Rest
Trent Monk (C) 1999 Trent Monk

I'm living for the One, the One Who set me free.
I'm living for God, the holy Trinity.
I've given Him my heart, my soul, my mind,
And now I know that He lives within me.

I lay me down on holy ground,
I give You my best, I know in You I'm gonna find my rest.

You are the Way, Lord, the Truth, the Life,
I'm gonna find my rest in You.
There's nothing left to say, no, I've made up my mind,
I'm gonna find my rest in You.

Your grace picks me up, Lord, when I am weak.
It's Your voice that I hear when in my heart You speak.
I'm giving my heart, my soul, my mind,
And now I know that You live within me.

I lay me down on holy ground,
I give You my best, I know in You I'm gonna find my rest.

You are the Way, Lord, the Truth, the Life,

Day Seventeen - This one's long and a little difficult to write out. It's the story of Moses at the burning bush, and sometimes the singer is the narrator, sometimes he's God, and sometimes he's Moses. God will be BOLD, and the narrator will be italicized. This is a great song, and I believe captures the story with a sense of freshness and comedy, while driving home a major point at the end. And it's by one of the pioneers of Christian music, who is still writing and singing, though many have never heard of him. In His Grip, joshua

    Moses
Ken Medema (C) 1971 Word Music

Old Moses, way back there in the wilderness.
Saw some smoke... came to the bush, and the bush was burning!
    God said,
"Take off your shoes, Moses, you're on holy ground.

Moses, I've chosen you to be my man.
Moses, way down in Egypt land!
Moses, I've chosen you to work for Me,
Moses, I've chosen you to set my people free!"

"Not me, Lord, don't You know I can't talk so good?
    I st-st-stutter all the time!
Do You know my brother, Aaron?
He can sing like an angel, t-t-talk like a preacher!
Not me, Lord, I can't talk so good.

And another thing: How will they know that I've been here with You?
How will they know what You've sent me to do?
Don't You know in Egypt they want little Moses' head?
Don't You know in Egypt they want little Moses dead?
Don't You know they'll never hear a single word I'll say?
Maybe You'd better get Your dirty work done another way!
    Not me, Lord!

"What's that in your hand, Moses?"

    "It's just a rod."

    "Throw it down, Moses."

"Do You mean, like, on the ground?"

"Yes, I said, throw it down, Moses."

"Lord, don't take my rod away from me!
Don't You know it's my only security?!
Don't You know when you live here all alone
A man's gotta have something he can call his own?
    Not me, Lord!"

    "Throw it down, Moses."

    "But, Lord, I..."

    "Throw it down, Moses."

    "But..."

    "Throw it down, Moses!"

Moses threw the rod on the ground, and the rod became a hissing snake!
Well, Moses started running... well, maybe you'd run, I know that I'd run!
He was running from a hot rod! Running from a hissing snake!
Running scared of what God's gonna do, running scared He'll get a-hold of you!
    And the Lord said,
"Stop! Pick it up, Moses, by the tail!"

"Lord, You have not lived here very long,
Lord, You've got the whole thing wrong!
Don't You know that You never pick up a hissing snake... by his..."

    "Pick it up, Moses!!"

    "Oh, God, it's a rod again... it's a rod again... it's a rod again!"

"Do you know what it means, Moses?
Do you know what I'm trying to say, Moses?
The rod of Moses became that rod of God.
With the rod of God, touch the rock and the water will come.
With the rod of God, part the waters of the sea.
With the rod of God, you can strike old Pharoah dead.
With the rod of God, you can set my people free."

What do you hold in your hand today?
To what, or to Whom are you bound?
Are you willing to give it to God right now?
Give it up, let it go, throw it down.

Day Eighteen - Another oldie from the group GLAD. This is a great song.

    Be Ye Glad
Michael Kelly Blanchard (C) 1981 Gotz Music

In these days of confused situations, in these nights of a resltess remorse,
When the heart and the soul of a nation lay wounded and cold as a corpse,
From the grave of the innocent Adam comes a song bringing joy to the sad.
O, your cry has been heard, and the ransom has been paid up in full, be ye glad.

O, be ye glad, O, be ye glad, every debt that you ever had
Has been paid up in full by the grace of the Lord,
Be ye glad, be ye glad, be ye glad.

Now from your dungeon a rumor is stirring. You have heard it again and again.
Ah, but this time the cell keys are turning, and outside there are faces of friends.
And though your body lay weary from wasting, and your eyes show the sorrow they've had,
O, the love that your heart is now tasting has opened the gates, be ye glad.

O, be ye glad, O, be ye glad, every debt that you ever had
Has been paid up in full by the grace of the Lord,
Be ye glad, be ye glad, be ye glad.

So be like lights on the rim of the water giving hope in a storm sea of night.
Be a refuge amidst the slaughter of these fugitives in their flight,
For you are timeless and part of a puzzle. You are winsome and young as a lad,
And there is no disease or no struggle that can pull you fom God, be ye glad!

O, be ye glad, O, be ye glad, every debt that you ever had
Has been paid up in full by the grace of the Lord,
Be ye glad, be ye glad, be ye glad.

    God Forbid
Kyle Matthews and Tony Wood (C) 1996 Careers-BMG Music Publishing

The more I know Your power, Lord, to mroe I'm mindful
How casually we speak and sing Your name.
How often we have come to You with no fear or wonder,
And called upon You only for what we stand to gain.

God forbid, that I find You so familiar that I think of You as less than who You are.
God forbid, that I should speak of You at all without a humble reverence in my heart.
    God forbid...

    Lord, I often talk about Your love and mercy;
How it seems to me Your goodness has no end.
It frightens me to think that I could take You for granted,
Though You're closer than a brother; You are more than just my friend.

God forbid, that I find You so familiar that I think of You as less than who You are.
God forbid, that I should speak of You at all without a humble reverence in my heart.
    God forbid...

You are Father, God Almighty, Lord of Lords, You're King of Kings,
Beyond my understanding, no less than everything.

God forbid, that I find You so familiar that I think of You as less than who You are.
God forbid, that I should speak of You at all without a humble reverence in my heart.
    God forbid.

Day Twenty - From an artist who has written several worship songs that have been incorporated into more recent hymnals.

    How Beautiful
    Twila Paris (C) 1991 JCI.

How beautiful the hands that served
The wine and the bread and the sons of the earth.
How beautiful the feet that walked
The long dusty road and the hill to the cross.

How beautiful, how beautiful, how beautiful is the body of Christ.

    How beautiful the heart that bled;
That took all my sins and bore it instead.
    How beautiful the tender eyes
That choose to forgive and never despise.

How beautiful, how beautiful, how beautiful is the body of Christ.

And as He laid down His life, we offer this sacrifice,
That we might live just as He died, willing to pay the price,
    Willing to pay the price.

    How beautiful the radiant bride
Who waits for her Groom with His light in her eyes.
How beautiful when humble hearts give
The fruit of pure lives so that others may live.

How beautiful, how beautiful, how beautiful is the body of Christ.

How beautiful the feet that bring
The sound of good news and the love of the King.
How beautiful the hands that serve
The wine and the bread and the sons of the earth.

How beautiful, how beautiful, how beautiful is the body of Christ.
