In the heat of the day yesterday, barely noticible, I find a bluejay chick struggling to live in the grass of a road median. So I look around, and the entire nest was knocked out of the tree. There were 5 chicks, 2 were already dead & had this one not stuck his beak up in the air for food, I would have never noticed.

I took 3 home, thinking that two would never survive....but with some coaxing all 3 are eating (Alpo & worms). I do raise chikens...but this is a little different. Anybody have any tips?

No, but good luck with your babies!

I get a number of fledgling ones or slightly injured (and other lovely bird types) on my back patio seeking refuge, but never babies like that. I simply provide water and they hop about a few days, it's almost a pattern now that they start on the flower pots and fly off, then move to the bike, then up to the rail on the fence, then to the top, then end up flying off. It's beautiful to see!

BTW, the idiot laws say you have to let the birds die, at least in our state. It breaks my heart, as the violent storms out here leave a lot of babies on the ground at least once a year. It shocked the crud out of me when we moved here, as I'd never seen anything like that, just walking along and seeing all these babies on the ground after a storm. So don't call any local places where you are to ask for advice, as you may end up with a hefty fine when you're just trying to help the poor things.

If you saw me just before Arbo, digging in my back garden, in 97 degree heat, looking for worms for the 4pm feedings, you would think me nuts...btw all the worms (with any brains) have gone deep in the soil...their not stupid.

Mix the alpo with water and then add in some egg yolk and bone meal, if you can get it. Do you have vitamins for the chickens? Add a little of that too along with a small amount of gritty dirt. :) I've fed that with flat toothpicks and it works great.

Good luck with them!! Keep us posted - and pictures would be great!

This may be the country boy in me, but I'd just feed 'em to the cat.

My 13 year old son found a small bird with its tail feathers tore up and couldn't fly. So he set up the aquarium for it in his room and fed it every day until it grew its tail feathers back. Then he carried it outside and let it go. It flew away.

I don't know what that means but What is shameful here to you is not to other cultures. It is a cultural issue rather than a moral issue.

I was just going by the standard you set up which was "innocent" and nothing more. Again it is just a cultural issue.
