404 hits

    I rarely check the stats on my website but have wondered about this before:

    It show less than 300 visitors for this month [about normal] with another 1300 hits that get '404 Page not found'

    This is about the same ratio as in the past. I do not know what it means. Someone once said something about 'spiders' etc. Does this mean a lot of people that try to look at the page do not find it? or something else?

    I think it means someone came to your site and the page was not there. You should use a browser and check all pages are working. Also when redoing pages be sure you keep the same name. If you have deleted any pages and search engines have them listed then if someone presses the link the 404 will show up.

    If people linking to your site have a mistake it could do this as well.
