Joseph---I've been tryin' to tell the people here on the BB the same exact thing!!!! If the free market is "exploited" enough(stupid Americans don't know how though!!)----we can make "big oil" AND OPEC drop to their knees as if they're at a Billy Graham crusade!!!!

That already happened in the mid-1980's in a huge way and to a lesser extent in the late 1990's. We survived even though lots of working class/middle class people lost their jobs in the industry.

And most of those in my neighborhood that manufactured your car thank you for your wise purchase. [IMG]

These investigations almost never turn up anything amiss. Those that know, see no legal problems now. These few congressmen are puffing for their constituents. disgusting

As a local business writer observed, trading (relatively)vehicles ONLY because of MPG will not work because the price of gas is already factored into the value of used cars.

Personally, I run cars into the ground and trash them so they never owe me anything at trade time.

Well, I can tell you that it worked great for me. I got a great trade-in on my pickup and now I get much better gasoline mpg. And I will continue to benefit, the Lord willing, for years to come from buying an Accord. [IMG]

How many MPG do the hybrid cars get? And are they affordable yet?

    Hybrids cost several thousand more.

The main benefit is in city driving. They are excellent on the highway but not enough to make up for the price difference in a conventional engine high mileage vehicle, IMO.

I thought long and hard about getting a hybrid back in May but since so many of my miles are on the highway I didn't think it was the best thing to do. Also, I was concerned about how much it will cost to replace the battery after a few years.

[IMG] [IMG] This is a killer...rightwingers talking
like earth day greenpeace liberals...why not...

Ya'll are talking like a bunch of liberals !!..please
hurry and find your green peace bumper stickers to
replace your bush/cheney stickers..oh forget that
just trade your gas guzzler in for a vespa..you are, but be very careful you are more
more likely to get killed and injured in an accident
on a motor bike or scooter(you will lay it down it
just a question of when). So please think rationally before you buy a scooter ..which by the way prices are going up! up! and up!..stick with vehicle and save your face from surgeons having to remove embedded gravel from your head(actually happened to a guy from church).

as for losing your truck..a truck is a tool and it
is a ministry...an Accord is only good if you have
a bunch of Apostles that need to go somewhere. ;)

Well to things also to consider is that China and India with fast growing economies are buying up all of the oil the can buy.
So it is time to conserve and look for sources of new energy. That has a lot more to do with survival than Green Peace or Alanspal deep thinker that he is.
The new hybrid cars will get better and cheaper(in relation to gas only).Right now the toyota gets about 38-45 mpg.
Talk about ironic, you have to buy a toyota, honda civic or now a hyndai to be buying an American built car.

Depending on the model, they are getting 35, 40, and even 45mpg. Their costs vary from 5k to 10k or more above the price of a conventional vehicle. Affordability is quite subjective, really. I think the Ford Escape hybrid is quite affordable and a good value, but others may think otherwise.

How well will it hold up if a moose runs across the highway, and by slamming the brakes, you only slow down to say...35 mph ? Or an antelope ? Or a mule deer ?

It happens all the time in Montana.

Better stick with your big SUV and 18MPG with a "cow catcher" on front. 4WD preferred. ;)

I can speak for the hybrid, since I've test driven several of them. A hybrid vehicle differs only in engine performance and efficiency. Braking systems are not affected by hybrid engine technology.

I can't speak for the antelope and mule deer, since I've never test driven them.

Yup. I drive an Isuzu Trooper, fitted with deer guard. I have had several very close calls, and I'm begginning to think that it's inevitable that someday I'm going to hit a big animal on the road.

John, I'm talking about the safety of me & my family. It would be impossible to stop if a deer ran out in front of you while driving at 70 MPH. Even 45 mph is out of the question.

True, but that would be the case with any car, hybrid or not.

At least my trooper won't crumple hitting it. A small car would.

Fear not, Bro, Curtis. Hybrid SUV's are starting to hit the market. The Ford Escape is a hot item. The Explorer is around the corner. The Toyota Highlander and Dodge Durango hybrids re due out in 2006.

Actually, right now I'm looking at a 2002 GMC Jimmy. Six Cyl, 4WD. Very tempting.
