Anybody heard of this book / this guy?

My birthday was Saturday and my sister bought me this book, 90 Minutes in Heaven by Don Piper. She knows that I read a lot and thought it looked interesting.

I was a little puzzled by the description on the sleeve .. and did a little research on Amazon.com .. and it turns out this book is about how Mr. Piper actually died after a car accident, went to heaven, describes heaven, and came back to life. Or something like that. Anyway, it was just weird.

And quite frankly .. kind of scary! This is a New York Times Bestseller.

Am I reading the description on this thing wrong .. or am I right?

    Any opinions?

(Needless to say .. I snagged the gift receipt .. and I think I'm going to bring it back to Target and see what other options are out there. Recommendations welcome.)

P.S. - here is a link to the book on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/dp/0800759494/?tag=baptis04-20

Someone gave me one over a year ago, I haven't read it, and very highly doubt I will, Just by your description alone it is unbiblical.

There's people who will be able to "Red Flag" several points to Piper's testamony

The main "Red Flag" I have is----he's dead for 90 minutes----1 1/2 hours---then suddenly he comes to life again---with no sign of brain damage whatsoever---no oxygen to the brain for 3 minutes will cause severe brain damage irreversable

Another flag is----he's in Heaven for 1 1/2 hours---then he comes back and is able to give intimate detail----when it was the Apostle Paul who was "caught up to 3rd Heaven" and was not allowed to write

There are other "Red Flags" that can be pointed out---but thats just me

I believe there to be a fine line of demarkation that seperates the physical world in which we live from the spiritual world in which Jesus lives and that it is possible for some folks to "linger around" that line of demarkation as they are near death----------then again---there are some who do not "linger around" at point death but who go straight on over the line that seperates the seen world from the unseen world---but it is possible I suppose for Mr. Piper to be so close to death---that the average paramedic would give him up for dead---even while listen for heart beat with stethescope-------I suppose it were possible for Mr. Piper to be so close to death that he is catching a glimpse of the unseen world

This was actaully talked about to a fair extent before. I would say take a gander at the search, and see what some of us have already said, while others can comment presently on it as well

You will note mine in the previous posting of it in another thread, is that it was completely unbiblical, unfactual with respect to scripture, and I believe concocted either in his mind during, or after for the money.

This book has been a bestseller for over a year - maybe 2 yrs. I'm surprised no one has brought it up before.

I have a friend in the Midwest who told me about it over a year ago because everyone in her church (conservative) was reading it and loving it.

I have not read it and don't plan to. I do not believe anyone has gone to heaven and come back to tell us about it. What we know of heaven is from God's word.

I knew Don personally and know he loves the Lord. I don't believe "from scripture" He was in Heaven but had strong hallucinations because of the accident. I think the scripture is clear...absent from the body...present WITH THE LORD. Stephen when being stoned saw JESUS not family and friends first.

True, but he was dying and was never going to come back therefore his statement was made and allowed by God to establish his relationship to God as well as verify Christ's own statements. Also nothing Steven saw is remotely the same as to what this person claims in his book.

I do not speak against this persons salvation (though personally I do not know if he is saved or not, but denfit of the doubt is given) I speak against his 'vision' and to the potential extent of his desire for monetary gain and status.

Let me add, with respect to his desire.., I can be wrong and am not above saying so, but with respect it scriptural verasity I only presume one would publish it because they reject scripture over their experience and has other motives as well.

Again, this is a presumption of his motives not a statement of fact.

No, I was simply qualifying what I meant to those 'others' who would read my post and potentially question my comment about knowing his motives. :)

I don't buy we need a NEW revelation from Heaven or Hell for that matter. Jesus said the rich man asked Abraham to send Lazarus back from the dead to warn his brothers about THIS PLACE OF TORMENT......what was Abraham's response?

Can someone please provide the link to where this book was discussed before? Thanks in advance. My sister called me several months ago very much taken into this book and I reminded her that only the Scripture is infallible. She was taking this guy's vision as from God himself. Talked about the language in heaven, one can feel everything someone is thinking and feeling when they speak, etc., etc. The thing that tripped me up is that his grandma was still old in heaven. That may be nice for him but what about his grandma???!!!

It seems to me many are taken by anything written except the Scripture alone.
