You missed my point. I said:
I saw the article on this BB forum, but you did not answer on this one. I saw you there and also saw you did not answer there. I realized that JRW did not answer to this man's questions in his website -- NONE!

Hey don't! Stick around! I like seeing you post!

OH - Mexdeaf - are YOU deaf? I know you work with the deaf. I'm learning sign language at church now and it's so fun! I can FINALLY communicate with the deaf at our church and even told one of the deaf guys just what my husband did with his foot with the sign language I know and acting it out. It's so cool to be able to communicate with more people but getting the language right is a bit different. :)

Dwight Lyman Moody (1837-1899) immediately comes to mind.

Acts 4:13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus. (KJV)

Acts 4:13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been to seminary. (post-modern philosophy)

I have to respond to this...

You do realize that seminaries are NOT a "post-modern" invention, but that they have been around for years? Also that Moody, as unlearned as he may have been, was in favor of education- so much so that he founded a Bible college??

I expected better out of you than this!

Usually it is only the most ignorant who would "dis" seminary educaiton. Those who attack it show only their lack of it!

When a man today knows Hebrew and Greek like Peter or John, then he can say he doesn't need for education.

I would not sit day one under the in-depth teaching of a man so arrogant as to think he did not need seminary, Greek, Hebrew, etc. Schools are an important way for both men to GAIN the education/training and for churches to KNOW they have called a pastor who can expound the Word of God.

The modern man-called movement for pastors to have a few years of bible college and maybe no degree and then foist themselves off as "trained" is ludicrous.

BTW, the two oft-used examples (Moody and Spurgeon) both saw the paucity of their education and STARTED SCHOOLS.

While Moody, Spurgeon, Chafer, et.al. had little formal training, they had much preparation. This is often overlooked. It was this preparation that led them to be involved in formal preparation in ministerial education and seminary training.

I've heard James White debate this many times. There isn't a question from the KJVO folks (or the Mormons, or Liberals, or Catholics, or whomever) that he doesn't ably defend the Word against.

I wonder how many colleges Peter, John, and the rest of the disciples attended? GOD calls men to preach! When HE does, He'll give them everything they need through the Holy Spirit. I've listened to some very stupid men with all kinds of degrees behind their name.
And, I would not sit day one under the in-depth teaching of a man so arrogant as to think "education" made him more Godly.

BTW, in a post promoting it, you misspelled "education" !

    AMEN!

Have I got news for some, some won't understand what I am going to say, others will KNOW.

The Holy Ghost didn't have to go to seminary to know how to illuminate the heart and soul of one who is the object of regeneration.

I wonder why so many college grads demand young preachers be a graduate of "their seminary" and forget that the Holy Ghost inspired men of low degree and just when did He stop being able to work in a man's life to expound the Scriptures?

Typical and totally what I expected- you want us to search the garbage dump for the empty cans of paint and dried-out brushes that you use to broad-brush men and women who are wiser than you.

I'd rather have a preacher with an education who makes a typing mistake once in a while than a "preacher" with an attitude of spiritual superiority who thinks he is more spiritual because he is just plain ignorant.

Over 500 hits of "James R. White" to wade through, mate. It's your link... surely you know it or have it marked? I mean, since you like to mention it so much?

If I find an uneducated preacher who has physically walked with Jesus or His apostles, I will gladly take them at face value. Until then I will sit under a man who has taken the time and effort to fortify that which God has called him to do. i don't want or need a "shade tree preacher" who may or may not know what he is talking about... and I have seen and heard way too many who don't have a clue.

As I have so-called "educated" preachers. God enables preachers. I think way too many men in the pulpit are there because THEY decided they wanted to preach, not God calling them.

I'm not knocking education, but that is NOT a standard to judge how much spiritual discernment a pastor has. To some, all education does is cause arrogance. I believe I've seen a few examples of that from posters on here, as a matter of fact. WHY would you possibly think just because someone attended a college, they are now more spiritually mature, or Biblicaly wiser than someone who hasn't? That's just ridiculous.

We are in agreement. Education does puff some up, and many take to the pulpit who were never truly called.

I guess we can agree to disagree about the rest of it. ;) I have sat under ignorant men and will not do so again. The word of God is too deep and rich to only scratch around the edges and ride hobby horses all the time.

Some seminaries are geared to pass on what the professors know, whilst others are geared to teach students how to learn. I prefer the latter.

Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed. Here we have what God has to say about learning. What we learn is transferred to how we live, and so learning is always essential in this life.

We never allow a few to discourage us from learning. The truly learned man can express himself clearly in the language of the people. I was instructed early on to find the youngest mind in the congregation and preach to them. The lawyers, doctors and other educated people will also understand the clear word. If I must flaunt my education, then I am paddling the wrong canoe up the wrong river.

    Cheers,

    Jim

AMEN Jim. I agreed with your other statements also. But the above was particularly important.
