I generally watch a lot of those police video shows & I have noticed that a lot of the police officers will touch the back of the car they pulled over as they are approaching. I'm curious to know why they do this. Does anyone know?

Not a cop but I'm a daughter of one.

My understanding is that they actually will tap the back of the car to distract the driver's attention from just them walking up to the car. If a driver is going to do something, it's usually a hairtrigger reaction and the tapping of the car can show if they're jumpy or not.

When you slightly push down on the trunk and watch how the suspension bounces back it is an indication whether the trunk is heavily loaded or not.

Was a police officer for 30 years and generally avoided touching people's cars unless I was going to open a door or whatever. There are guys out there who would rather you touch their wife than their car.
