Some years ago an important case was argued and won by a sheriff who stood up to the attorney general, the BATF, etc....
Please note........ ALTHOUGH this was a gun control matter..... a 2nd amendment federal law... it was not the base of the case as the sheriff didn't have any standing because law enforcement was exempt. However, the Brady Bill had certain requirements and demands on the sheriff's departments throughout the US and were told to enforce this law under penalty of consequence if they did not comply. Generally, many sheriffs were miffed.... but a few recognized this made demands upon the sheriffs which overstepped the constitutional right of the federal government to dictate..... and therefore sued the government:

This case was argued and WON on the Tenth Amendment..... a more powerful win....
Please read the court document, complete with the findings and the dissenting opinions.

A summary of order is as follows:
    http://www.law.cornell.edu/supct/html/95-1478.ZO.html

Please print this out and send to your state officials when complaining about federal laws which overstep the boundaries of the state government.

Please note also.... it is not the federal government's duty to 'police' itself! This is the duty of every citizen and every elected official to recognize the difference between laws intended for the citizens of their states and laws federally imposed as overstepping the boundaries of those rights reserved for the state and its citizens. It is a necessary act of good citizen ship to remind our officials of their elected duty in restraining the federal government when it is seen as overstepping its boundaries....... such as the health care reform bill.
