I'm fairly certain that some on here would agree with such a thing and argue for it. Our nation has gone insane and I see nothing that makes this UMC a true church.

Why does it bring up the emotions in you that it brings up?
If it showed the Savior in His death throws, would you have been offended?
There are often other people playing the part. Is it because this was an older person playing the part? Is it because it was an older person shown as he died of a bullet wound?
Or is it really, truly, purely because you think they are replacing the person of worship with someone else and saying to worship him instead? Do you honestly believe they are saying to worship him instead, or is it possible they were saying something else with this scene?

If they want to celebrate the thug, "Traybone" Martin, that's up to them. Just don't expect me to count them as a church or to believe they're reasonable people in any sense of the word.

'Unto us a Son is given' right under it, and then trayvon there where Christ is to be. It's called sacrilege to those who aren't leaning toward apostate and politically correct dissident religion.

[1] The young man's name was Trayvon. T-r-a-y-v-o-n. Why is there mockery of him by mocking his name in this thread?

[2] I can't stand this Nativity scene. There is NO question about what they are trying to say here and it has nothing to do with social justice or Christ.

[3] According to the article, they had other thought-provoking Nativity scenes in the past. I read about some of them. They weren't all like this one. They had one with Mary, Joseph, and Jesus being homeless. People gave money to their church for the homeless because of that particular creche. There were other social commentaries with their Nativity scenes that where the emphasis was on Jesus in different social settings. Jesus was the emphasis - a social cause was the underlying and secondary message. In other words, BECAUSE of Jesus, let's make change in things that are unjust.

[4] But this scene has replaced Jesus with a flawed human being. Ergo, no one thinks of Jesus in this creche. I don't deny them their right AS a church to draw attention to social injustices, in this case, they chose the WRONG venue to do it. There is no difference in this and putting up a cross at Easter with Trayvon hanging on it.

Instead of not thinking of Him, I can see where it would make everyone think of Him, because everyone is focusing on two things:

    1. That isn't him, so they automatically think of Him.

    2. Wait a minute. We are all very upset over a flawed human being unjustly killed. Are we this upset over a perfect human being who was killed?

I'm wondering if the idea was to say "hey, if you can be this upset, this focused on one human being out of many, how about taking a few minutes out for the ONE while you're at it?

Again..... you are replacing Jesus Christ with a flawed human being. That is both sacrilege & idolatry.

...and judging the motives of others in her reply.

It's unreal what people accept and believe these days, and justify via their PC mindset. Yes indeed, socialism and PC is reaping what they've spent years sowing. It's a bumper crop.

The scene is shocking, but someone on here actually defending it is equally as shocking.

This is refreshing, thank you. We need more professing believers with this level of integrity, common sense, and true discernment. Too many are being made into the mold of the world contrary to Romans 12:2.

While I agree with you that I find this display inappropriate, you too are judging motives of others. The very same claim that you level at another poster.

BTW not all Methodist Churches are "liberal", if I understand you. There are outliers in all denominations, even among baptists......consider the nutjobs in Kansas.

You really think it's sacrilege to take a plastic, made on an assembly line image of G-d, likely bought at some local chain store, and replace it with something else? That's your concept of defiling something sacred?

I think the defiling of something sacred started with the concept, continued with the mold, went on down the assembly line, was promoted with the money used to pay for the piece of plaster, plastic, or whatever they used, then kept right on going when someone decided that putting it together in some tacky scene that never actually happened that way and calling it truth made it somehow "sacred." Changing the plastic piece in the middle? That isn't where the desecration of something holy started.

You may want to review what you believe is sacrilege.

I am amazed ... no, flabbergasted ... that a member of this board would deign to consider defending this, much less actually doing so. But then, from what I've seen of this member, it is not surprising, either.

    Good grief ...

Which is why I predicted this. Not this one specifically, but bro, don't be surprised if there are more. We have too many professing believers who are pressed into the mold of the world and instead of fighting for the Gospel they're navigating the flagship of political correctness and leaning toward support of apostates. And she says we need to review what sacrilege is after showing us her view has put on a clinic of the practice? Unreal.
