I've recently joined Baptist Board, and (probably because I am English, not American), I am finding problems with some of the abbreviations used in messages. I don't mean those that are used in all sorts of emails, such as lol and imo (for "laugh out loud" and "in my opinion"). And I realise that BB is short for "Baptist Board", and IFB means "Independent Fundamental Baptist" (which I'm assuming is what we in England would refer to as "Grace Baptist" or "Reformed Baptist". I know, too, that KJVO is "King James Version Only", but I'm not sure about "KJVP" (though I would guess it's "King James Version Preferred"). But I am stuck with PDC, GQ, PM, and several others I've come across. Can anyone suggest where I could find a list of these abbreviations, with their explanations?

    Thanks. Every blessing,

David Lamb (Foxhole Grace Baptist Church, Paignton, Devon, England)

Thanks for replying, Digging in da Word, but perhaps I wasn't clear enough. My problem is not with the Internet and chat abbreviations, but with abbreviations such as PDC, GQ and KJVP that crop up in messages on the Baptist Board, and that probably are understood by American Christians, but are unclear to an Englishman like me. I should emphasize that I am not criticising or complaining in any way.

    Yours in Christ,

David Lamb (Foxhole Grace Baptist Church, Paignton, Devon, England)

I have no idea what GQ is unless it is the men's magazine! LOL
PDC would be that mess that Rick Warren started, i.e. Purpose Driven Church.
    You are correct about KJVP.
Your best recourse would be when you see someone use an abbreviation (thoughtlessly, I might add) just ask them what on earth they are talking about. .
It irritates me to no end when these folks use abbreviations. :BangHead: Don't they know people all 'round the world are looking in and in order to be understood one must be very clear? Abbreviations do nothing but show inconsideration to others and displays an inherent laziness.

    A couple more:

OP refers to the original post, the post that started the thread

ROFL is Rolling On the Floor Laughing.

IMHO is In My Humble Opinion.

I don't know what GQ is either.

You mean like when people write av rather than authorized version? As in, av1611jim?

Just stirring the pot a little.

David, welcome.. and remember, most the folk on this board are American (of the USA variety) and write in various kinds of American rather than English. They may not speak in tounges, but sometimes it seems as if they write in them ....

    Regards
    Bob (from Australia):type:

Bro. David, I'm not sure American Independent Fundamentalist Baptists are the same as Reformed Baptists or Grace Baptists in England.

Let's define terms. By Reformed and Grace, I take it to mean those churches are Calvinistic. Correct me if I'm wrong.

IFBs, in the colonies at least, are primarily not Calvinistic, although there are a few individuals who are. Most Southern Baptists (SBC) are not Calvinistic, though 150 years ago they were, and some are today.

IFBs are primarily conservative in their theology, and some churches tend to lead toward legalism (that is, equating spirituality or ones salvation with external practicies). Example, many IFBs (or IFBXers, the X-treme IFBs), place heavy emphasis on short hair, no pants or slacks on women, KJVO, soul-winning numbers. Not all, of course.

    Hope this helps.

    POV = Point of View.

BTW, "Colonies" for what is now the USA, ceased to exist in 1781, if my history does not fail me! The former colonies became "states" after the "Battle of Yorktown", and the subsequent treaty. FWIW. (For What It's Worth)
